So I was listening to the latest Adam Savage podcast and his guest was NASA's Chief Technology Officer. He mentioned that in the 2030s, NASA will be going to Mars twice. The first trip would into Mars' atmosphere and then then second would be a landing.
My discussion question is: What would be an acceptable failure percentage for your trip? Would you only go if there was a 10% failure rate? or would you still go if the failure rate was 75%? |
|
Would not go if there was a 100% success rate. What is so special about Mars? -there are barren red deserts right here on Earth if that is the desired landscape.
|
|
Nope. Manned Mars missions are a waste of resources at this time.
We could put a nuclear power/water/oxygen/hydrogen plant on Ceres for less than it would cost to put a man on Mars and bring him back. Maybe if I didn't have a family I'd go just to be the guy who went. |
|
Nope, because they want a new libtard society developed there. Why help with that goal???
|
|
In the words of Mark Watney: You of out of your fucking mind?

I figured more people would jump at the opportunity for this.

I still rather we went back to the moon first and work out building habitats and stuff there and open it up to the average guy to go as long as they can pass a physical and mental evaluation.
Are they still saying Mars is a one way trip? If so no |
|
|
As long as there are no liberals allowed. Someone had to say it!

Yeah, I guess once you're seen attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion everything else if so humdrum...
It's a different PLANET!!! IN SPACE!!! It's not like it's a new Five Guys burger joint down on the corner! |

I think it would be good to colonize the Moon and get that going efficiently and economically. Then, start thinking big. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

I'd like to see a manned Mars expedition before I die. I've given up on ever getting the flying car I was promised when I was a kid... |

We should send the Leftists and Communists there instead........after all it is the Red planet
|
|
Is the salary great than $19.00 an hour? Is there a per diem? If so, where do I sign up. |
|
Returning to the Moon .......... practice.
Landing a Mars lander ... on Earth .... practice. Landing the same design, unmanned, on Mars .... practice. Setting foot on Mars .... victory. Why? Because it is there. People who don't understand that statement are free to continue toiling in their daily regimens. |

Read the book. It's fucking amazing compared to the movie. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

For a two-way trip with a high probability of success? Sure, that's easy.
A one-way trip to colonize Mars? Hell no. Read the Red Mars / Green Mars / Blue Mars trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson. It's science fiction, but illuminating as to psychological and societal issues that come into play when you give up Earth for a one-way trip to Mars (for colonization). |

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact, it's cold as hell. And there's no one there to raise them, if you did.

Nope, when things get shitty and they will, there's no way out of that boat. There is plenty of excitement here on earth.

I'm too old now, but I'd have gone in a heartbeat when I was younger. Incidentally, I watched 'The Martian' last night. Good flick.

We need to find if egible plants can grow on Mars. Long term human habitation will be impossible without it.

No. No water, no trees, no gentle breeze, no hunting, no fishing. What's the appeal?
