55MPH was such a cluster. Biggest impact was drivers completely lost the concept of lane discipline... before then you got out of the left lane when someone was coming up behind you. After 2 decades of 55MPH that tribal knowledge was replaced with the attitude 'F them, I'm going the speed limit and will stay wherever I want'

No. The 55 limit is retarded. Limit should be 80-100 for freeway traffic, or, better yet, just go full autobahn. In town limits are generally fine.

I'm driving at 80-85 on a highway. I don't care if the speed limit is 80, 70, or 30... I'm doing 80-85 as best I can.
All that the speed limit becomes at that point is the number that the cop puts in the left column of the ticket. |

Most posts have already nailed it, but I'll speak from a mechanical point of view. Vehicles now are designed differently than they were prior to 1995. If I were to guess, the best efficiency for modern vehicles is probably 10-15 mph faster than older vehicles, because they're geared differently and are designed in a wind tunnel, which is why they all look similar. In comparison my 1986 F150 with a 4 speed manual is easily pushing 3000 rpm by the time you reach 60mph, and going much beyond that causes the fuel economy to tank. So even if the concept were justified, which it isn't, the limit would need to be set at 65-70.
