Quite a few people said m3 but what gen???
E46 m3’s are drivers cars all the way and can be had in decent condition for +/- 16k and supercharged ones mid 20’s You could have a supercharged e9X for 30-35k You could get a twin turbo f82 m4 for 40k I chose e46 m3 for my project.  Attached File Attached File |

I lost a clutch, so dropped the trans for the new one, then broke teeth out of two gears (factory trans). That grenade unknowingly twisted the case slightly, and so the rebuild didn’t last 10k miles. Also another drop for a factory clutch already (only getting 60,000 miles per factory clutch). The third trans was a crate and the heavier clutch also went in (Attempting to get more than 8 oil changes per clutch), and it lunched the input shaft. Fourth trans, more broke teeth out of 4th gear. Another trans drop for a the 4th clutch. Aftermarket went about 100k. So the 4 clutches (2 factory, 2 aftermarket) 4 trans (rebuilds or crates), and 6 drops... Fuuuuck doing that anymore. Dollars per mile, I do better with the unpopular 48RE trucks. And have less down time, and fewer roadside recoveries needed. I currently own over 20 vehicles and over half are Dodge/ Ram Cummins trucks. And I’ve put millions of miles on trucks that have come and gone out to pasture. I have a truck I’m putting up for sale next week as soon as it’s cleaned up. It’s pushing 400k miles, so it’s on the chopping block and has been tagged out of dispatch. The new truck is already here and rigged to replace it. |

My sister just sold my brother's 95. He bought it as a beater from Missouri and after his motorcycle death my dad started rebuilding it. Lots of body work, front and back custom bumpers, looked great. My greatest regret in life is not spending more time working on it with him. It needed more mechanical work but he got sick again. After he passed my sister took it over. Her and her bf put a lot of time and money into it but it was too big of a project for them and, after asking the family, sold it. That's my pick, with some heavy time put in by a good shop. Blah picture of it below. Besides that, I'd go with a used extended cab F150 4x4 and the 5.0. Add 285's and a turbo and get it! Dad had a 3.5 turbo and that thing could move. Maybe 15k for the truck, 5 or so for the turbo, 1500 for tires on stock rims. Next choice , a used long bed F250 on 35's. Tied with that is an 8.0 Suburban with a SAS and 35's. Actually, that might be my first choice!  Attached File |

I'd take my 2010 charger pursuit I paid 7k for and slap a Magnuson supercharger on it and nitrous. It already has a cat back exhaust and a 90mm TB and a 91 octane tune and a CAI. I'd keep the rest.

Looking pretty hard at the Lexus IS350 F Sport. Little low on power but I'll exchange that for reliability. Want something that can eat up some highway miles without tiring me out. Need to get a lightly used one to make the under $40k marker.

If you are talking about a daily driver than you want something that is not going to be breaking down and expensive to fix because it is old with a lot of miles. A VW GTI is fast, gets great gas mileage and you can easily buy one for under 30,000 which gives you extra money to get custom wheel, tires, and a tune. It can easily seat 4, and if you need more cargo room there is a lot of space with the seat folded down. It has great brakes and if you buy one with the electronically controlled mechanical differential it will have neutral steering and will out handle many of the cars I see listed here.

Clarkson lives in a country where they have fewer cars than drivers and where hatchbacks are more or less the standard. There's no way in hell I'd spend that kind of money on a wrong wheel drive hatchback. Here in America, it's normal to have more vehicles than drivers. And it's pretty normal for one of those vehicles to be some form of truck, van, or SUV. I don't think it's a stretch for guys to post sporty vehicles in this thread with the underlying implication being that they'll have something utilitarian available when things need to be moved. Where I do agree with you and disagree with many others in this thread is that a lot of people are posting things that aren't appropriate for actual daily driving. The entries I'm skeptical of include: Motorcycles 20 year old European basket cases Roadkill style project cars Hard edged sports cars with organ bruising suspension Assuming you actually drive 15-20k miles a year like working age men did before COVID hit, those vehicles are horrible choices. |
