People east of the Mississippi would probably shit themselves if the saw some of the desolate areas of the west.

Two DollGens in our county, a third getting ready to build in my town of 1000. No grocery in town, just six main street businesses. City of 75,000 30 miles to the east .

My nearest Dollar General is about 25 miles away. A real grocery store is about 40 miles.

The town I work in has seven DGs. The town I live in has eight. The closest one is 5 miles away.

If you have a medical emergency your only hope is a helicopter.
If you have a fire your garden hose is your only hope. |

What about being west of the Mississippi and being over 100 miles from the nearest Dollar General?

Right at 10 miles for me too. We do have a convenience store about 4 miles from us. Indian guy sold all four of his other convenience stores to buy this one right next to a boat landing. Sucks for him because right after he opened it up they closed the landing for renovations and it will remain closed for another 15 months. They are starting to lower the lake levels today for a construction project on the dam that will take that long to do.
But we give him as much of our business as we can. |

There's no Dollar General anywhere near where we live. I don't feel like I'm misssing anything except cheap junk anyway. Rural living has many advantages.

In PA the small dying little towns all around (old coal country). The mom and pops are dying off and closing up. Big stores are pretty far away, but you can get milk/bread some staples at the dollar store.
Small towns have been getting dollar stores for the last few years now. Popping up like weeds. Seems like every little 'burg has one now. |

There was a "magic mart" about 20 minds in the other direction. It kinda sucked. They recently built a DG just a few miles from the farm, I figure a lot of people are pretty happy. |

Never been in a DG in my life and never paid them any attention. Dang, that was kind of a mistake...$236.19 today. The economy is driving these guys hard.

They built one at the end of my country road where it hits the highway. I still have never went to it. I use the gas station/deli/pizza shop/hardware store/storage/deer check in place across the road from the DG that has been there for 50 years.

View Quote THIS Since DG started adding refrigerated sections to their stores MrsFlyingGorilla prefers to stop by one for a quick pickup of a few items rather than driving 30 to 40 miles to get to an Aldis or a large grocery store. 10 miles is in the sticks? Meh. My drive to highschool was 35 miles each way in the late 2000s.
Where I am now I have a dollar general 25 miles east or 20 miles west and I live a few miles off of one of the biggest highways in the state in a city of 25,000. I'd have to go about 150 miles to find one from where I grew up. Dollar general has zero impact on how rural you are here. |
