I've been on the Eisenhower, Kennedy and HMS Invincible. They were all very impressive. HMS Intrepid and US Ticonderoga were pretty cool too.

I have been on the Forrestal, Independence, and Ark Royal in the 70s. Possibly Saratoga.

Only time I’ve been around a carrier was the Midway museum....it was amazing to see in person.

They are overwhelming, especially for a 12 yo kid like I was. Dad was an AT,  CPO at the time.

Indeed. One can be done in the comfort of your own office. One requires sending someone to Norfolk. Yuck.

Most of the cold war IIRC, the issue was that the early US subs (nautilius) couldn't keep up with nuclear powered CV's though. It came as quite a shock to US naval planners when a russian sub (november class IIRC) chased down the enterprise shortly after it was commissioned. Its partly for this reason later US subs were quite speedy too.

Not first hand knowledge on my part, but I have read that each class of nuclear attack sub in the navy had 2 propeller designs - a low-noise stealth prop, and a noisier, but higher speed prop.  The ones doing carrier escort were supposedly fitted with the prop that was noisier, but faster.

How do they paint the sections of the hull resting on the keel blocks?  Jack it up slightly and move one out, paint it, let it dry and replace/repeat?

Good question.  The to the best of my knowledge, they don't.  They just catch those spots on the next DSRA when the blocks are placed differently.  Any EDOs around who can confirm that?

Nautilus class didnt, and reputedly they were noisy as fuck too. But US sub doctrine was different than soviet so there was some significant divergence in design priorities until late in the cold war.

Is there anything to report?

"During a time of no major war the world's wealthiest nation -- equipped with the largest, most highly trained military, with an immediately ready air force, silent nuclear subs, and all the accoutrements of modern-day imaging, intelligence, counter-intelligence, and active defense system -- decides to fix it's boats in it's mainland docks.

More at 10."
