I have found it impossible to have ONE favorite American fighter; there are too
many good 'un's to choose from. My favorite USAAF bird is the L model P-38 for the PTO, and, like the OP, the P-47 for the ETO. My favorite Navy fighter is the F6F Hellcat (my Nana built these, an added bonus); My favorite Marine bird is, of course, the F4U Corsair. American WWII fighters are my all-time favorite aircraft. |

Unfortunately, P-51 Mustangs cost 3-5 million more dollars than I have.
But 450 miles per hour is really fast. |

I'm well aware of that, but with that being said if you would consider the Spitfire an American fighter plane, you are probably one only a handful on the planet earth that would do so. The Spitfire is British Steel through and through. |

That's what made the P51 so good. It was plentiful, but did everything well and most importantly was easy to fly. Pilots flew it well. |

You would think people have the general understanding that the Spitfire is a product of the United Kingdom and is predominately known world wide as a British warplane. Or was that not what you were insinuating? For whatever reason from time to time you seem to try and provoke an irrational response with semantics, I'll tell you what I've always told you, play your games if you must but fish elsewhere. Way to jump in from the sidelines and derail the thread. ETA: So are we now of the general thought process that if a nation uses arms from another, they are now considered their own? In that same line of thought, your Suzuki Vstrom I guess is an American bike yes? Since its sold, distributed, and ridden in the United States......Hell my BMW's are American bikes! And Harleys are now Japanese and Kuwaiti because I've seen them there! |

P-38 and P-40 cause my grandfather flew them in combat. Followed by P-51,case he flew it but it was after the war.

Which one do you not like?? I think they were all badass! Look at the youtube video P-51 low pass
it gives me goosebumps. Designed and built by folks that may have ridden to school on a wagon, no computers, no 3D animation. People accomplished a lot before the information age. |

My personal favorite is the Thunderbolt. Late in the war, after Germany's surrender, the P-47Ns were the fastest production fighter in the world. Republic went to a "wet" wing to add the necessary range, reduced the number of parts, lightening up the heavy beast, clipped the wings a bit to increase roll and speed and added the most powerful version of the R-2800 engine. With the monster turbocharger, the P-47Ns could hold well over 450mph TAS well over 30kft.
That said...the Mustang was the acme of fighter engineering in WWII. It was good...if not great at everything it did. The Packard-Merlin engine with its outstanding two-stage, two-speed supercharger would maintain power from sea level to 30kft+, making it marginally faster than any Axis fighter at all altitudes. It could outmaneuver almost all other aircraft at all altitudes, at any speed over 250kts IAS and could easily control the air battle. It was the greatest offensive fighter since the Zero in 1942. It was also pretty darn comfortable for the pilots. The P-51Hs were light, fast and oh-so deadly. The Mustang was a real hot rod and arguably the finest all around fighter of WW II. |
