Essentially a piloted supersonic cruise missile with stubby wings. I'll bet it didn't turn for shit though. |

It was the competitor to the AD Skyraider. Bought in very limited numbers, want to say 150 or so right, after WW2. There is one survivor which is in the US Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola. It is a huge aircraft for a single engine plane. In many ways, it was superior to the Skyraider. It could carry a bigger payload, farther. But it was more costly and complex, so it was quietly phased out in the late 40's/early 50's. |

Was that where your dad was stationed? Did he ever tell you about the Bear bomber an F102 shot down off the coast of Okinawa during that time? |

They were still flying T37's and T38's out of Laughlin AFB in 1973 when we were there. There was an F86 sitting in the dirt down past the shops and pad we used to walk out to and look at. I was fascinated by that plane due to watching "The Hunters". A very good Korean War movie.

View Quote And the fastest of the 2 is on top of this picture. The single engine world speed record is over 50 years old now and the plane that set it was the back up. The "6" they'd prepared to fly for the record attempt didn't fly that day. Some mechanical/electrical problem knocked it out of the attempt so they put the back up plane in the air since they already had everything set up to record the event. |

National Museum of the USAF, Cold War Gallery. Cool place to spend some time if you enjoy AF space and aviation history. Images are processesed this way for two reasons - the various color temps from al of the different lighting played havoc with my metering, and I was trying different looks. You may or may not like these.

They would take one of the ground crew up in the equipment operator's station and he would whip empty beer bottles out to sound like bombs. |

Some ComBlock aircraft from the end of the Cold War ('91) Sorry for the crappy images - some are crops of crappy scans of old 35mm photos with a cheap telephoto lens and not the greatest long-lens technique.

Another cool museum I visited was in Germany. One big regret was that I didn't allow enough time there it was awesome. The link for the place is here I was in awe at the number of super cars they had there but a load of old war related stuff and lots of birds everywhere they could stick them. |
