I need a scope for a ar-15, for deer hunting and general use. 1x4, or a 1x6. id like a bdc reticle.... prefer non illuminated... but if I get anough good reports I might go with illuminated...
whats the opinion on this optic? heres the ar mod 1 $276.00 https://www.amazon.com/Leupold-115388-Mark-Rifle-Scope/dp/B00AB40UMS/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1474550339&sr=8-8&keywords=leupold+1+x+4+scope |

I have one on my Colt 6920, mounted in the Leupold mount, and I really like it. I think it is an excellent choice for an M4 type rifle where you are setting the rifle up to shoot from contact distance out to 100 yards or so. Obviously you can shoot much farther than that, but the 1-4 is optimal at those distances. For deer hunting, I prefer a 3-9, as I want to be able to reliably connect longer shots. I have 2 Mark AR Mod 1 3-9x40 scopes as well, and I am very happy with them.
The only other thing I would say is that the target turrets on the Mark AR Mod 1 may be less than optimal for hunting, depending on how you hunt. It is relatively easy for a target turret to get inadvertently turned in the field. For a deer rifle, I usually go with a VX-II 3-9x40. |

I played with it at cabelas on one of their fake plastic ars.
It seemed quick and lightweight and very bright and clear. Went with primary arms 1-6 for extra mag, true 1x, and ranging bdc reticle. I already had a 1-4 millet dms1 and the leupod was lighter and nicer. I used 1-4 on a hunt and always wanted more magnification. |
|
I would take a look at the new Nikon P-223 1.5x4.5. Same class of optics IMO and it's nice.

View Quote so.. think I might be better served with the VXII ?? basically same scope, for $288.00, without the adjustable turrents. I'm considering two of these, one for the ar, and one for a marlin 44 mag. acutally 3 I guess, ar, marlin 44 mag, and marlin 45/70. https://www.amazon.com/Leupold-110793-VX-2-Rifle-Scope/dp/B006PH5SUY/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1474552065&sr=8-8&keywords=Leupold+vx+II+1x4+scope I was considering a vortex strike eagle, for the ar, but I'm not a fan of their reticle.... although 1x6 power would be nice. |
|
I am a huge fan of Leupold scopes. Mostly because their build quality is just ridiculous. I have had them survive abuse in the field that you wouldn't believe and still hold zero. The target turrets are nice for the range or for a precision rifle, but for serious hunting, they can be a liability. I think you have to assess what kind of hunting you are going to do and what kind of shots you envision taking. Maybe get one VX-II and one Mark AR Mod 1?

I have the VX-R Patrol in 1-4. It's a darn nice optic for the money. Maybe see if you can find one of those, used.
I've owned the Nikon 1-4 and it was a nice scope, also. Very good glass for the money. I'd like to try out the Vortex PST 1-4. |
|
lots of options it seems for a 1x4 or 1x6 scope... burris mtac, leupold ar, leupold vxII, primary arms, vortex.. all around $250-$300. id really like a bdc reticle, but pretty much all of them are illuminated.
id rather have a non illuminated... just something else to break IMHO. |
|
I've shot with the Mark AR and the VX-R, and both are solid scopes for the price, IMO.

Unless you're going to dial adjustments in the field or at the bench, exposed turrets are a liability, not an asset. For a scope that you "set and forget," capped turrets are a benefit. They're less bulky, and they won't get moved by accident. I don't see the point to being able to dial field changes with a 1-4 or 1-6 scope with a BDC reticle. I think a lot of scope makers put exposed turrets on these kinds of scopes because consumers think they want them. I would much prefer to have capped turrets on my 1-4. |

Weaver Super Slam at Natchez.
1-5x24 30mm, heavy duplex, Japanese production, despite what the website says weighs 15.2oz on a scale $299, I have two they are very nice, can't link from phone |

Nikon M-223 1-4 with choice of BDC or Point Blank reticles. can also get custom turrets.
clear glass and the closest to 1x of any scope i've owned including my Trijicons. Less FOV than the T's due to the 1" tube but Also lighter in weight. |

Check out the Truglo 1-6x. Very impressed with it. True 1x, comes with mount and the pigtail.

View Quote You know you can buy an illuminated scope and take the battery out right? I used the Burris TAC30 ($299) for years in competition and never turned the illumination on. Love that scope. At 4x, everything is inside the donut out to 600yds. For a $300 price point, the TAC30, Strike Eagle, and PA ACSS are all great. Strike eagle has the best warranty. |

Vortex Strike Eagle. 1-6x24 reticle isn't too cluttered...Street price of about $300

That would s a good scope for the price. I have at least one of them.

Take a look that the Leupold HOG.

I'm a big fan of the PA 1-6. My son put one on his AR, and I liked it so much I put one on one of mine.

I use a Primary Arms 6x on my .308 for hunting. The ACSS reticle is awesome and the scope has held up great! http://i526.photobucket.com/albums/cc345/unfmoose/PA10%20CWWII_zpsfmyu6l5z.jpg View Quote I love my PA 1-6 ACSS, and wouldn't mind having more of their products. It's not a precision-grade scope, but I can hit steel targets at 500 yards with it. magnification and ammo choice(Wolf Gold) make it a challenge if the wind is up, but the reticle is the shit once you get past 200-300yds. |
|
I'm going to go against the grain and suggest the HiLux/Leatherwood CMR 1-4x. It's a less popular scope, but has excellent glass, a very useful reticule, green illumination, and is relatively light. The only real downside is a somewhat unforgiving eye box at 4x magnification. I have stacks of budget scopes, and the CMR really stands out compared to stuff like the PA, Bushnell AR, and others in the $200-$500 price range.
They do have a 1-8x if you need more magnification, but it is about twice the price of the 1-4x. |
|
|
As previously noted, the Hi Lux CMR is pretty awesome. Another optic you might want to check out is the Minox ZX5 1-5. Solidly built, good clarity and decent light gathering given the objective size.

Tag. I'm in the same dilemma with so many choices out there.

Look at the Weaver V-series 1-3x. No illumination, duplex reticle, Japanese glass. $175

I like this one . It is illuminated but you don't have to turn it on. The reticle is BDC and visible as black if the battery dies.

Primary Arms 1-8x24 blem for $299
It says $379 but look under other sellers for the used and the first one will be Primary Arms blem. ETA: I couldn't find anything on the outside of the scope and I guess my eyes aren't good enough to find the specs on the outside edge of the glass. |

the primary arms 1x8 is looking pretty nice. The 1-6 is pretty damn cool. Glass isn't the best. But all the other stuff is better than the other offerings in my opinion . |
