My15 YO wants to start competing.
Looking around online, appears to be a bunch of "sanctioning bodies", organizations, etc out there.
Most require you to join their organization ($) and then pay an entry fee(s)

Most competitions are several hours away, but 100% RAW has one within an hour's drive coming up.

Just wondering if they are legit.
Also, appreciate any tips for a first timer,  etc

Thanks,

These are the guys that were recommended to me by people I respect, and will probably be the org I compete with when I finally grow a pair.

I wish I would've been lifting at 15. Good on him.

Thanks.
I was concerned, as there were lots of typos, etc on their website.
Looked a little sketchy to me.
My son's reply, was, "Dad, they're WEIGHLIFTERS! What did you expect?"

I was actually very concerned about him lifting heavy, asked about it here and elsewhere, and finally asked an orthopedic surgeon, after he had a BJJ related injury.
She gave him the greenlight.

I'm still kind of concerned as I think he has become obsessed with lifting,(15+ hrs per week) but he does go at things he's interested in very hard and he is very competitive, almost to an unhealthy degree.

How far are you from this place? Based on his writings and presentations, the co-owner, Matt Gary would be one of my top picks to train my kids. I don't know him personally though.

I think powerlifting/bodybuilding can be great hobbies as they instill work ethic, commitment, structure and a myriad of other great traits. Though "obsessions" can be a bad thing, I think this will be good at his age because it can steer him away from other possible negative influences at school and social settings if he's more concerned with his training and diet. I can speak from experience that I definitely wasnt the life of the party when I was bodybuilding because I could only eat certain things and didn't drink

My only concern would be what you already brought up with the doctor, but if they said its ok, I guess youre good to go.

Couple hours away (on a GOOD traffic day) and an area I avoid like the plague!
He belongs to a nearby gym and trains with some like minded friends, plus a few older guys who compete have been working with them.
I guess we'll see how he likes it/does ,and see where we go from there.
Looking at age/wt class results from other competitions, he expects to do well.

This group was formerly the ADAU.  Drug free that actually tested, banned, and publicized ban.  They took raw lifting and drug free seriously and just a very good group of people.  They have since switched and it has been a few years since my involvement; however, I understand they are still a solid group. Well he's signed up and ready to go.
.LOL, I came home and he was wearing a Borat-looking "onesy".
Told me it was a singlet.
Sure!

He pulled 510 the other night, so he's feeling good about it.
Told him he probably shouldn't max again, less than 4 weeks to go.
Thoughts?

I was secretly working out, after a 30 year break, TRYING, in vain, not to lose any more ground.

That said, there's a local kid who was benching 450 at 16-17 YO!
But he was 6'4" and 301 #

Pretty neat experience but took ALL day.

Some  strong people out there, from a guy who, at <242#, opened his DLs at 775, went to 801, and then 830!!!
His DL, squat and bench totaled OVER 1800#!!!!

To a teenage girl, at 132# (And she was tall) , who set a new record DL at 365!

Some crazy strong senior citizens out there too!

Looks like I'll be carrying him to more competitions, he REALLY enjoyed it..

Folks with RAW were great, took their time to walk us thru, as first timers, and gave tips and pointers afterwards.

He was a little disappointed with himself, couldn't hit what he wanted to, or even what he pulled warming up!
He was VERY nervous and I think it just got the best of him.

Couple of the RAW people, a few other lifters as well as a couple trainers all came over to offer advice and tell him the way he comes up off the floor, he has a lot more in the tank, but needs to work some on his technique.

He already signed up for another event later this year so I think he'll do better.
He came home from the gym last night with all the callouses ripped off his hands and a BIG smile on his face!

ETA: REALLY supportive crowd, everyone screaming, cheering, and pulling for each other.

I am glad he had a great time and was around a ton of supportive people. Did he pull his attempts in the warm up room? If so I hope he figured out that isn't a good idea.

He pulled his opening weight a couple times beforehand, and did make that one in the competition, but then failed at his next two attempts.
Then he pulled it clean in the warm up room afterwards.

Did someone say RAW lifting?
