We escorted a Rear Admiral from Estonia in 2006 in Iraq and got to meet the Estonian Ranger unit serving there.  Pretty awesome guys even though the RA's PSD team tried to start an international incident.

Lol what type of international incident?

Basically, long story short:

Went to chow hall with weapons hot (like our SOP's stated we can when we had a VIP) but the chow hall nazis weren't on the same page.  Some little chickie snack chow hall nazi tries to grab the main Estonian PSD guy's loaded MP5 from him, he jumps back, switches safety off to auto and points it straight at her face.  Everyone froze for about 20 secs as we waited to see what was going on.  Our Escort Officer (a 2nd LT) ran up to him and tried to calm the situation.

It finally ended when we took out our mags (while weapons still chambered), showed the nazis, and once we got past them, put magazines back in.

This is kinda how the scene went down in retrospect:

This was a fucking bomb dropping on Beaver Cleaverville. For a few seconds, this place was Armageddon!

There was almost a firefightttttttttttttttt!

She was engaged to some dude and quite drunk, as in speaking incoherently while the crazy Dane and quiet Swede were sitting around the fire.

It was hard for me to watch the Germans come in on the finish line after being hunted for 8 days by the Estonian Defense Forces.

Germany and Central Europe don't give a crap about Estonian independence. It means nothing to them.

The main nations that have shown interest in Estonian independence are:

The US
Sweden
Finland
Denmark

Estonia is where the damn started to crack politically for the Soviet Union, and they were the first to declare and gain independence. Russia was 2nd to exit the USSR.

here is a theory that having been fought over and conquered by the Germans,Danes,Swedes and Russians, all these warriors have represented their people's best DNA and a combination of that is why Estonian guys tend to be fairly big and fit and there tend to be more tall, thin  women than average. There is also a vanity aspect. It's a cultural thing but it's not acceptable to roll out to the store in pajamas People of Walmart style so maybe girls just overall look a bit nicer. I tend to think Latvians are more attractive on average but I'm not gonna say that out loud

Poor Kaia Kanepi She tries her hardest but when the most famous -relatively speaking- Estonian women are Karmen Pedaru and Carmen Cass it's tough to have that sort of a look to live up to.Her last name means "marijuana" BTW: kanep=cannabis. When the Germans decided to give Estonians last names, they picked nouns; it's why you have family names of Fox,Squirrel,Moose,Apple,Owl,Night,Big Loaf of Bread,Little Loaf of Bread etc and a bunch of things ending in trees.

I don't think the "age like milk" thing is any more true than any place else but the stereotype is funny. Yes,there are old grandmas who look like little witches but I'll say,my SOs mom is 50 and still holding it together pretty well

In the grand scheme, it's an utterly insignificant country but Estonians have a fierce independent and competitive streak combined with, maybe call it a sense of embarrassment or an inferiority complex of being so far behind Finland and Sweden developmentally that they tend to be highly self-deprecating  and critical. I think that sense of nothing is good enough is what drives education and interest in technology though...and a lot of complaining about everything. There is very much a desire to be thought of as Northern European or Nordic rather than Eastern European and fair enough, there is far more in common with Finland than Bulgaria.

If you watched the clip and wondered why Toomas Ilves speaks like an American,it's because he really is one. He was born in Sweden but grew up in the US.

Well said.  And they tend to really hate Russians - understandibly after decades of Soviet occupation and repression of Baltic culture, language and identity.

It's an international long-range reconnaissance competition now.  Start out launching zodiacs from a battle ship in the Gulf of Finland, paddle to shore under machine gun fire from MG3's, with high explosive charges being detonated under the water on the beach head, then make your way as a team from checkpoint to checkpoint for 8 days, while the Estonian Defense Forces motorized Light Infantry hunt you down.

I trained some Latvians in their country a while ago.  Riga is fucking amazing in the summer, young women outnumber young men, they outnumber them by a lot if you subtract the men wearing deep-V tanks and capris, and a higher proportion of them are hot than our women in the US.  They love us out of hatred of Russia, and you can get by with nothing but English.  Not too expensive.

The Galils were somewhat of a practical but somewhat political decision.

Sweden gave lots of their license built G3s and Clinton donated  M-14s that are still in use as parade/guard rifles and DMRs but there was a desire to have a 5.56 rifle for NATO integration. Not wanting to anger Russia by arming Estonia - nationalist Russians tend to think of Estonians as unrepentant Nazi lovers- the US and Germany weren't initially eager to sell new weapons so the Galils and Negevs came from Israel.

Replacing them isnt a big priority, the next things to be bought will be armored vehicles heavier and more capable than the XA-180s,possibly tanks... I don't think tanks are a great idea even though it's embarrassing having to borrow one of Latvia's half dozen T-55s for anti-tank training. Germany is firesaleing Leopard IIs but I think more ATGMs and lighter vehicles like CV90s would be better.
