So a more accurate death rate would be to take the number of cases there were 2 weeks ago and use that.

2 weeks ago there were 59 suspected cases

This would explain the lock down of 20+ million people in 7 cities with a virus that spreads as easily as the common cold.

we also need to know the health status of the victims and their demographics. there is a BIG difference in 30% death rate of other wise healthy 30yr olds vs 90yr olds. a good run of the regular flu in a nursing home could have a 40-50% while the gen pop is 5-10%.

this could be the big one or it could be nothing at all. we don't know yet other than it's caught the attention of those that watch this stuff. Sometimes these types of warnings are issued early as a caution until more is known vs actually being a threat. as for China, who really knows there reasons for the level of response. i suspect it would have been ignored had it not made international news during trade negotiations.

Should one read into the fact that multiple cities and many millions of people are locked down?

What would it take for the US to impose quarantine on a similar scale?

A patient was admitted to Aultman Hospital in Canton Ohio with flu like symptoms that had recently traveled from China. They called the CDC and went over their case and decided it didn't meet the criteria. Just FYI

Shoulda been more clear: as a guy who used to do that, what's your opinion on them using that kind of equipment in this kind of situation? Is it necessarily a bad thing or just cautious?

i am not sure you can read anything into anything china does. quarantining on that level in the USA is not only impractical it is virtually impossible to to. this is why they work so hard on identification and monitoring.easier to mage 10 people exposed than 10 million "maybes".

with transit in the modern world quarantine of large ares isn't much good. i get exposed today and become infectious but not symptomatic or diagnosed in 10 days and i could in theory infect people all over the world if i am a traveler.

what i just went through on the known stuff it appears this may be less infectious than sars and several of the deaths were ederly males with existing health issues. i am seeing this as another media ebola scare right now. Concern sure, always being concerned about stuff is a good thing. i am not changing my daily routine or even really worrying about it at this point. ebola was gonna kill us all with several outbreaks, SARS was gonna kill us, MERS was gonna get us... on and on.

here's the thing about bio. if it's gonna get you there is damn little you can do to prevent it in todays world. wash your hands, wash your ass, cook you food, clean up your area routinely, get vaccinated when offered. That will take care of 99.9% of things that will kill you in this realm

when you're dealing with unknown bio, thats just standard precautions.

i will say this. when our team got a call to assist we always went full bore on gear. even if it was absolutely not needed, it looked good on TV and gave our team practice on working in it. so take that for what it's worth.

This whole thing stinks. Especially how rapidly it's escalating. I've been speculating this might be a bio-weapon gone wrong, but regardless, China doesn't typically take these kind of precautions. I mean hell, their tap water is so hazardous that their own people won't drink it, and sanitize their dishes after hand washing them. Machine dishwashers are considered pointless there because the water is so toxic anyway. They don't tend to care about the general population that much. I'm thinking it is much worse there than they want it to seem.

FWIW it is EASY to build a hospital for the infected in 6 days. LOL. In communist countries with unarmed populations it is VERY easy to get the infected "taken care of" quickly.

Also cruising through Japanese twitter right now and the samurai people sure ain't too happy about this spreading there. One guy doesn't want to go outside because there's too many Chinese tourists in his area, and some are apparently calling for a ban on travel from china.

ETA:Quite a lot of Japanese are calling for a travel ban, and think Abe is putting tourist money over the well being of society.

When the people's whose job it is to count are sick or dead.
Or of course when they realize counting no longer matters.
Typically you collect data until there is no need to.
If preservation of society is no longer feasible, there is no need to
