Ammostore is selling 20-gauge shotgun shells loaded with 14.5mm artillery simulators that explode on impact. Says they're for rifled barrels only with no choke (no duh on the no choke part, but why rifled barrels only? Can't they be used in smoothbores too?).

What the heck are these, and besides making noise, what use are they?

Ammo store had them at last weekends gun show. I was going to buy a few except that they were 20ga only. I only own 12 ga shottys.

I have seen some of these set off in person just recently, they are sweet. The guy was fireing them out of a single shot and blowing chunks out of an old stump that measuerd several inches across (4-5 inches).

Not much use other than making noise though, to me anyway.

The only reason I can think of for the rifling is if they are spin fuzed.

eta:  another site mentions the need is to ensure its stable in flight and hits nose first(no keyholing).

These were originally designed for a 40mm launcher with a 20 gauge adapter in it.

exploding projectile = Destructive Device, hence subject to NFA tax, as far as I know.

I'd steer clear, no amoutn of fun is worth the jail time.

exploding projectile under x ounces= non destructive device, right?

Not regulated, too small to be considered a DD.

1/4th of an ounce of explosive, I believe, and I doubt you could fit any more than that into a 20-gauge slug.

I almost said you should shoot these out of a Saiga, but then realized Saigas lack rifled barrels...good thing I didn't make a fool out of myself, heh.

Ammo Store is selling a single-shot 20-gauge shotgun with rifled bore for $180, and it comes with ten of these exploding shells. Otherwise, they sell the shells for 10 for $20.

It might be worth looking into as a pest control device or for scaring the shit out of looters in a Katrina situation.

"Back off or I'll use the grenade launcher!" Boom! BOOM!

"Oh shi' homes! He got a 'splodin' gat! Le's book it!"

Also, they're 3" magnum shells that are already opened up, so I don't think they'd fit into the magazine.

I have some of the projectiles you speak of, they are old military spotter rounds that explode when the tip strikes a solid object. They also puff a bright red smoke cloud for spotting.
I have loaded these into 12 gauge rounds and they work pretty good.
I had some not go off because they were hitting the target sideways. solved that problem by tying on some fishing string to act like a tail.
I saw them selling their hand loaded rounds at the gunshow last week.

Incorrect. Bird Bombs are now being regulated and can only be sold for legitimate agricultural use. No more Bubba Joe backyard fun.

The ad for the shotgun still talks about the shells though. And they DID say they had a limited supply. Looks like they might have sold out of them, rather than getting harassed by the ATF.

Cool

They are real slow, I wonder how they would do for home defense?

I wouldn't ever use them for home protection, but I wonder what they would do to a bad guy?
