Perfection? To an ever decreasing number of the gun community. Had its time/run near the top, but never made it. Like the 10 mm, 357 sig, 41 mag, etc. Longer than some, but never quite making it. Will be around a long time, but never will achieve top tier long term status like 9mm, 45, 38/357.

Meh. I sold my last .40 last year. I really tried to like it, but it was just an odd duck amongst all my 9mm and .45.

Also .40 S&W was on he drawing board before the FBI adopted 10mm.

I remember, OP.

I was working at a mom and pop gun store/shooting range in Lubbock, TX at the time. Demand for the new round, and the guns chambered for it, was off the charts. We had great difficulty getting enough S&W 4006's to satisfy demand. .40 S&W was also the first time I ever saw pistol ammo sold in 20-round boxes...Hornady.

Boss wanted to shoot some .40, but we didn't have a pistol in that caliber. So we grabbed a rental S&W 1006 and loaded it up...should work, right? Just headspace off the extractor, right? Fired two full magazines without a hiccup.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane, partner. Dang, I'm old!

I like 40S&W, especially for USPSA, but 9mm is so much cheaper to buy in bulk and todays +Ps are damn good. I have 1 40S&W for USPSA LTD and everything else is 22, 9mm and one 380. I might get a 45acp if the CMP ever gets the 1911s.

It always seemed like a wonderful middle of the road compromise. Larger and more powerful than a 9mm, more capacity than the .45. What's not to love?

But today it's all about compact weapons for EDC.

I waited about three or four years before I picked up a 23 after the .40 came out watching to see how it performed and who picked it up. After all that time its still a decent round , but it will remain my only .40 and will get limited trigger compared to my 9's and .45's.
