What would be the ideal twist rate for a 6 inch and 8 inch barrel?

Been wanting to get a Springfield trapdoor mares leg made due to a fun but unforgiving game.

Cause your wrist is going to need one. Why not get a BFR in 45/70 and have multiple wrist injuries?

Are you going to handload?  If so, what bullet?

I shoot deer with a 300g going 1550fps.  No recoil in a Marlin GBSL, but probably still a handful.

If you're shooting heavier bullets, that changes things

Off the shelf ammunition

I would use more classical loads though, including legit black powder loadings that you see every once in a while.

Off the shelf ammunition, had better be relegated to trapdoor loads, even then the recoil from a handgun is not something I'd want to experience.

I dunno man, Im 6'5 and around 250 and I find a super hot loaded 45-70 abit of a pig on occasion. Makes 12 gauge 3 inch slugs seem like BB gun in comparison.

I never thought so many members here would be recoil shy.

But then again people don't shoot things like I do.

I shoot full power loads through a 3in aluminum revolver all the time.

Which is totally weak compared to the .50 BMG. Your point?

Sometimes the bigger you are the more recoil you feel.

I have seen thin people less affected by recoil than a muscular/fat person.
They can move with the recoil.

I saw a 16” rolling block in 45/70 once,  I wanted bad…

I shot a BFR in 45/70 and the recoil wasn’t that bad, I thought the .500 S&W was worse.

First, this.  Second, the attempt to make a Model 1868 pistol at Springfield ended in failure with 2 samples made resulting in tumbling bullets...

...as I posted in your other thread.

The Italian clones (which I assume are what you'd use as the base gun) can handle Marlin loads. Probably not good to give them a diet of them but they are proofed with them in mind.

I sort of like the idea but I'd rather have a long rifle version over a obrez type deal. I want a big smoke stick and a bayonet.

That was 150 years ago, alot has changed even with antique cartridge designs

45 70 revolvers shoot just fine

Also I made the 1st thread a few weeks ago was a joke but now I'm actually serious

You mad bro? The rittenhouse got ya down, sounds like it.. Maybe your wifes boyfriend will take you out for nuggies later tonight.

Back on topic..

they got the tumbling due to too slow of a twist rate in the stock barrel. Since it was based off the blackpowder version. Using modern smokeless powder and a faster twist you can Make your dreams come true Little pony.

Your revolver has a good grip, those straight wrists you pictured are going to be hard to hold.  I've never shot a trapdoor load, so it maybe way less than I think. I've only shot Federal 300 grain power shocks out of my SB, and I wouldn't want that in a handgun.

Looks fun. Do it!

Personally, I would try to just find a donor Trapdoor with a FUBARed barrel out towards the midpoint or beyond and chop everything outside of the lines. Probably wouldn't be the worst idea to double check pre-1898 status in regards to SBRs, before going all choppy, just to avoid potential complications. Wouldn't start messing with a new barrel until the original has had a chance to succeed or fail to deliver.

If you can shoot a 454 just fine then a standard load 45 70 in a short heavy rifle should be fine, Full length they are about 7 and a 1/2 pounds, cut up its still gonna be around 5 pounds

45-70 why stop, step up to the real Sharps rounds, Even out of a 32" barrel these will get your attention.

God, it would be like 4 to 5 grand to get this done.

I could buy 2 fiat 650 engine for that.

Oof, I guess dreams will stay dreams in this case.

Just buy an original preferably one that has already been fucked with and cut down. The rate of twist will be correct for any bullet weight you can shoot out of it.

Trapdoor loads are pretty mild so recoil won’t be tremendous.

If you're serious about this, just keep feelers out for a parts or project gun that will hopefully be substantially less than the $2k you mentioned above. In a lot of ways, this project has a good chance of being doable. You could get super lucky and find a Trapdoor that some jackass chopped the forend off at sporter length (ideally, right ahead of the rear barrel band), cut the last couple of inches off the buttstock, carved a deer's head that looks more than a little bit like a pit bull on one side and a leaping buck that looks like a prize Hereford with a small tree caught on its head on the other side of the remaining buttstock, grafted wood into the comb to create a Monte Carlo cheekrest and topped it all off by installing a ventilated recoil pad (with snazzy white line spacer), then accidentally jammed the muzzle into the mud and banana peeled the last foot of barrel upon shooting it with the bore obstructed. Not exaggerating much; you should see some of the "it came from the basement" stuff I've bought just to have examples of old .45-70 bolt guns. However, the one described above would still have everything your project needs left unscrewed with, while being a junked up parts or project gun to nearly everyone else.

With a little luck, someone here will network you onto something suitable or you'll stumble across such gathering dust on some shop's back shelf or something.
