In Mississippi during muzzleloader season you can use a 45/70 instead. I dont have either one but i am interested in both. I like the thought of faster loading and less cleaning with the 45/70. Any thoughts? |
A 45/70 is so far superior to BP, it isn't even funny. I'd be all over a Marlin! (Don't show me ballistic charts, the ability to have a magazine beats the hell out of that.) |
You son of a bitch! Yes, I'm jealous. Always wanted a guide gun. |
yea but if you really want one i would buy the Taurus. it's a much better gun. not that the Thunder is junk. it's a tank and like the SPAS shotgun is a piece of history. |
Taurus does not make a 45-70. Only the 45lc / .410 I also would not trust a cast frame to that kind of recoil. But thats just me. I like the tank. |
I lucked into a H&R Centenial model Officers Carbine. I presume it was made in 1971 , Mine was aparently never fired , had one mark on the barrel that looks like someone kept it in one of those old glass front gun cases with the felt covered wood racks. The centenial model has nice wood, decent case hardening color on the lock and a medium heigth tang sight. I shoot with this tang sight pretty well (crummy old eyes don't work well with standard trapdoor sight) and I really like the weight and ballance. I have owned a Pedisolli sharps repro with set trigger and huge octogon barrel. The regular trigger was too heavy and the set trigger was too light . The darn thing was so long it was like trying to hold up a piece of sewer pipe! I am not really a hunter but this H&R just begs to be taken out and shot at something to toss in the freezer! |

Uberti makes a Springfield Trapdoor like Custer's men used. www.uberti.com/firearms/Trapdoor.tpl I've been looking at getting one to go with the guide gun. |
I was going to ask if they allowed modern lever actions or if it had to be single shots like reproduction trapdoor springfields and the like |
| I had a 45/70 and a 45/110 Sharps rifle. Both were excellent, both were based on a very impotant part of our history. Both of mine were Pedersoli's and were far more accurate that I am capable of shooting. I would also recommend using black powder loads. It makes little difference in short range accuracy, but it adds a ton of FUN factor. BOOM instead of a bang and lots of smokey goodness!!! |
So you're saying the 45-70 won't kill zombies then? |
|
Whaahh? I think I paid less for the real thing! |
|
I have a NEF Handi in .45-70 and I love it. It is nice to use a round with a lot of history behind it. The .45-70 is also a lot of fun to load for. You can make neat light kicking loads using a 400 or so grain bullet in front of 10 grains of Unique. Just don't use a jacketed bullet as loads this light may leave the jacket in the barrel. |
Marlin 1895GSS-LTD cut down to 16 inches, bead blast all the stainless steel, relocated front sight, big loop DRC lever. |
Been shooting the 45-70 for 10 years. My first was a converted .43 Spanish. My current is an older Marlin customized with Smith sights, full length tube and a custom glove lever. You can see some cool custom Marlins at http://www.brockmansrifles.com/ He's the only one I know that makes the glove loop. You will not be sorry with a 45-70 in any model you choose. |

Here are the regulations for Mississippi "Primitive weapon" season. PRIMITIVE WEAPONS "Primitive firearms" for the purpose of hunting deer, are defined as single or double barreled muzzle-loading rifles of at least .38 caliber; single shot, breech loading, cartridge rifles (.38 caliber or larger) of a kind and type manufactured prior to 1900, and replicas, reproductions or reintroductions of those type rifles; and single or double-barreled muzzle-loading, shotguns with single ball or slug. All muzzle-loading Primitive Firearms must use black powder or a black powder substitute with either percussion caps or #209 shotgun primers or flintlock ignition. Breech loading single shot rifles must have exposed hammers and use metallic cartridges. Cartridges may be loaded either with black powder or modern smokeless powder. Scopes of any magnification are allowed on primitive weapons. Sidearms are not allowed during primitive weapon season. www.mdwfp.com/Level2/Wildlife/hunting_regs.asp#PRIMITIVE%20WEAPONS I think that they are getting too liberal in the term "primitive weapon" and they will eventually have to backtrack on some of what they are doing now. |

The original H&R break top rifle came to being in the late 1850's Here's a write up on a predecessor of the H&R top break rifle buffaloclassic.tripod.com/ Seems the lineage of the current Handi rifle might fall under Mississippi law and allow Handis in 45/70 to be used. |
If that is the case, they may allow the use of a lever action as long as the tube mag has a blocker installed, forcing the rifle to be loaded one round at a time. |
Hmmmm. So... Since it has been widely established that the difference between a Coonass and a Jackass is the Sabine River... Is the difference between a Coonass and a Dumbass the Mississippi River??????? |

Very good.
