Dad's 2006 F250 4x4 has been binding up since new.
With the steering wheel straight ahead you can turn it 1/4 to 1/2 and it bind and buck hard. This happens even on slick snow/icy roads. Have checked the front end but nothing is out of whack that we can see. Does feel like the brakes are on but the front wheels spin free. Anything else to check? No front end alignment shops around here in the bush. Update-1 Changed both the tranny and transfer case oil. Both were black as night. Tranny had what looks like sand in it and was almost 2 quarts low. Transfer case had a little bit of aluminum shavings. Seems like normal break-in though. Front diff will have to wait for a few more days. The silicone will not cure in teen temps.

Sounds normal to me for a part-time 4WD system. You can't make sharp 4WD turns without a center differential/full-time transfer case. This happens on slick roads with ice and snow on them. Can make the same turns in my 97 F350 with 33's and not bind like dads does. It will almost take the wheel outa your hands. |

Check your axle joints. A dry seized up joint will make it feel way worse than normal 4x4 binding.
The way I check them is to ;if the wheel, lock the hub, turn the steering all the way one way, transfer case in 2wd. Spin the tire by hand, if the joint is tight/ binding, you'll feel it. |

Will give it a try but all the u-joints are greased every month. I push grease in there till i get it coming out of more than one cap. |

Any chance there is a limited slip diff or locker in the front axle? Brian Not unless Ford snuck it in there and never told dad.
Sticker does not show any locker or limited slip for the front. May have to try changing the gear oil i guess. Thanks for ideas everybody. |

I would hope this question wouldn't be required, but are all 4 tires the same size. Has he always owned it? Possible mismatched front and rear gears? Some binding on turns is perfectly normal though. Tires are all the same and have even rotated them with no luck. Since new off the lot. Only way the gears would be mismatched is if ford messed up when they built it. This binding is not normal. Other super dutys do not bind like it. You only need to turn the wheel 1/4 to 1/2 turn from driving straight ahead. This thing has also blown 3 power steering return hoses. Took out the cooler and has yet to blow any. |

Sounds like the front diff is locked. It sounds like a spool, but Ford never made a spool. the bucking is from one wheel skipping.
Jack the front up with both tires off the ground, lock the hubs and see if both tires turn in the same direction at the same speed. have someone hold one wheel and try to turn the other. I wonder if a spider gear broke inside and locked it up. Spools in front suck, thats why you have tru-trac gear posi's for front axles. The front tires should turn in equal but opposite directions without binding. I have driven FT & PT 4x4's all my life. Your truck is broken! |
