5 engines

This feature has been offered on the 747 for a long time, maybe from day one, but don't remember ever seeing one in use.  Looks like they have a shroud mounted behind the spinner to block flow into the core of the spare engine. The text on the link alludes to this--don't recall that feature being part of the kit either.

Very common in the B747 fleet. We had numbers for takeoff, cruise and landing on the -200 fleet and I know they have them for the -400/-8.

Cheapest way to ship spare engines around the system, really no big deal.

This. It is a rarity now days.  But it is a great way to ship  spare engine to a remote location or back to the shop.

The old JT9-7a engines has some teething issues back in the early days and trying to ship a large engine was kind of a bitch back then.

Not true.

The carrying of a 5th engine for transport was removed from the design of the -8

The fan blades are removed and a plug is entered so no air goes through the core.

So is the hard point removed of are you saying they can still carry the core?

The structure inside the wing for the mount for the 5th engine was removed from the -8 as many operators did not use the option.

The other minor models (100,200,400) that do have it when the 5th engine is installed the fan blades are removed and a plug is installed so no air goes through the core.
