I hope this is okay to post here. I designed this 6" f8 Dobsonian telescope that I plan to 3d print in pet-cf17. I will be using a sv181 focuser. I have read about people printing their own crayford style focusers, is it worth the effort to do that? I have an old cannon rebel crop sensor camera and was wondering about the feasibility of attaching it to this to maybe take some cool photos in the night sky? Anyways here's the render. Im waiting for an additional heated filament dryer to print from before I start making it. The tubes are 25mm carbon in a truss configuration. This is the biggest I could print on my printer. I didnt want to futz with multi piece housings etc. I think this will still be light enough to mount on a sturdy tripod. If that proves flimsy, I will build a dob style mount. Life is busy and I have my piston kits taking up a LARGE portion of my time and brain power. Everything is designed for the most part. made some changes to the primary mirror holder. just waiting on a new .6mm nozzle for the 3d printer to print the parts. manufacturer says the .4 can clog up easy with filaments with fibers in them. Im using Pet-CF17%. Ordered some eyepieces and the focuser. going to be using a crayford style 2" so it can hold a camera better. The primary mirror is backordered until October supposedly from agenaastro.com. I really want to start printing this thing but I think it would be wise to wait until I have the mirrors in hand so I can verify focal length and make sure I get the axis of the focuser tube the correct height off the face of the primary. My wife is also very interested in this project so we will be building it together.

| Very cool! As for a GoTo mount I'm not sure for a dob other than building your own dobsonian mount and adding the motors/encoders, but you could always just star hop instead. If you're wanting to ditch the Dobsonian mount and can add a Vixen plate to it then maybe a used AVX or CGEM mount? They can be found for around $500 used if you have time to wait and shop around. I have a 10" dob but it's all manual. I have a C6 for imaging on a CGEM mount and a vintage C8 on a Nexstar+ SE mount also, but my dob is strictly manual. |
