You need to get a programmer, can switch between mileage and power.

Look into a Tony Wildman Tune, Or contact Jody at DP-Tuner for an F-5 or F-6 Switch

Those canned ham tuners you get at the auto parts stores are junk.

Also your truck has PMR rods so the mods will have to stay on the low side.

Leave it alone.      The 7.3 has enough power to pull anything you hook on to, and will run forever.  The biggest problem diesel owners have is screwing around putting a chip in it usually causing overboost of the turbo, leading to MAJOR engine problems like blown head gaskets and blowing a turbo.    If you're looking for gas mileage, remember you are driving a diesel, not a Prius, but it's the price you pay for driving something with a set of balls behind it.  You also mentioned the more black smoke the better,   but it just unburnt fuel , contidicting your wanted increased fuel mileage.

I drove a 7.3 for  ten years and it had over 390,000 miles on it stock, before it died.  Don't fix it if it ain't broke.

Just my 2 cents though.

I have an early 2003 with the 7.3, and have had the Superchips 1705 tuner on it since it turned about 400 miles...basically the truck was brand new. I have 154,000 miles on the odometer, and have not had any issues. I drive in the Tow/Performance setting for day to day, and the Tow/Safe when pulling the Toyhauler.

Make sure you install a quality set of gauges with at least an exhaust temp gauge, then drive it by the gauge. A 4" exhaust and a better air filter / intake will also help deal with the tuners extra fuel. I know some think that a thick black cloud of smoke is cool...but in reality, it's wasted fuel, caused by an over rich environment.

I like my 7.3, it's a Tow Beast, towing our 13,000lb toyhauler all over the country, without a hicup.
