I bet it will be below zero, remember how government math works, seeing as the REAL unemployment rate is over 12%, they cherrypick variables.

A month ago, we joked when we said that for Obama to get the unemployment rate to negative by election time, all he has to do is to crush the labor force participation rate to about 55%. Looks like the good folks at the BLS heard us: it appears that the people not in the labor force exploded by an unprecedented record 1.2 million. No, that's not a typo: 1.2 million people dropped out of the labor force in one month! So as the labor force increased from 153.9 million to 154.4 million, the non institutional population increased by 242.3 million meaning, those not in the labor force surged from 86.7 million to 87.9 million. Which means that the civilian labor force tumbled to a fresh 30 year low of 63.7% as the BLS is seriously planning on eliminating nearly half of the available labor pool from the unemployment calculation. As for the quality of jobs, as withholding taxes roll over Year over year, it can only mean that the US is replacing high paying FIRE jobs with low paying construction and manufacturing. So much for the improvement.

The United States economy gained momentum in January, adding 243,000 jobs, the second straight month of better-than expected.

The unemployment rate fell to 8.3 percent, giving a cause for optimism as the economy shapes up as the central issue in the presidential election. The Labor Department’s monthly snapshot of the jobs market uses a different survey, of households rather than employers, to calculate the unemployment rate.

Measured by both the unemployment rate and the number of jobless — which fell to 12,758,000 — it was the strongest signal yet that an economic recovery was spreading to the jobs market. The last time the figures were as good was February 2009, President Obama’s first full month in office.

One thing most people don't know about is the thousands upon thousands of seasonal workers. The nuclear power industry has two work seasons for outages with the first starting in January to February and ending in May. The second nuclear outage season starts in September and will run until late November/early December.

Not everyone is employed for a whole outage season and come summer, 90% or better of outage workers are drawing unemployment.

The fossil power and oil refining industries work on similar outage schedules.

Obama has been saving up some of the stimulus money for last minute use before the election.  It appears that he is starting to use it.

If Obama gets reelected the unemployment number will go way up after the election and he will blame it on the Republicans.

I understand the real unemployment rates. What I don't understand is we used the BOLS numbers all the time, when the stimulus was suppose to hold unemployment under 8.0%, but now it's no good.

I understand the real unemployment rates. What I don't understand is we used the BOLS numbers all the time, when the stimulus was suppose to hold unemployment under 8.0%, but now it's no good.
We used them to illustrate that even the manipulated unicorns and rainbows data indicated the stimulus failed. Now we are using them to illustrate that the data is being manipulated even further. The market-ticker link above shows this very well.

To actually grow the Private Economy, you would need to generate 350,000 jobs a month. This has not occurred in any month during this administration.

The labor participation rate is lower now than in the last 25 years.

Anything that can be done to get Barry reelected will be done.

So, if you add in the 1.2 million people who "left the workforce" last month, the number of jobless is really 13,958,000.

(12,758,000 / 8.3%) = 153,700,000 workers in the US.

13,958,000 / 153,700,000 yields an unemployment rate of 11.0%.

Real answer follows without all the hyberbole.

A combination of a slow private job growth rate (state and local .govs are shrinking) combined with a large amount of people; retiring early, going back to school, living off .gov while the .gov is willing to keep paying and the new graduates just living with their parents.....results in a small unemployment drop.

The U3 number ONLY includes those that are actively looking for work.
When those people that are retraining, and those on welfare get kicked off it, and the basement dwellers get sick of living with mom, reenter the workforce there will be a small increase (provided the economy is still anemic) or a flattening of the unemployment numbers for a time.
