I grew up mostly in the 90s. To me, the 90s represents the "last stand" of rock. The 60s had some kickass music, the 70s is, well, the 70s. The Era is full of some of the best music ever written. The 80s has a bit of a black-eye, but still a lot of good music came out in the 80s.

Terrible music really started branching and growing in the 90s. Lots of boy-bands and shitty vocal-only pop bands, etc. Rock pushed back with the grunge movement, which yielded some good, some bad, and some great music. We had some different, but rocking music floating through the airwaves. Blame it on MTV, blame it on whatever--it happened. Even punk, like it or not, really died out.

Eventually, it all took a turn downhill, in my eyes, as even the rock progressively got more "poppy" and less real. Today, most mainstream rock is full of whiney-vagineys playing boring music, just trying to have one hook in every song.

Metal even went down the shitter. Taking the "straight-edge" movement to the max, against it's meaning, and evolving into a bunch of whiney screaming fucks over the same music everyone else plays.

Now, of course there are exceptions to every rule, but this is for the most part how I feel about music within the last two decades.

What are some of your favorite songs and bands from the last decade of rock?

Iced Earth, is definitely a big part of the remaining 90's.

Rust In Peace came out in 1990, after the 88-89 metal depression where everyone said "thrash was dead." Megadeth came out, and kicked you right in the jaw with this album and surpassed almost every other album that came out in the 80's.

3 Inches Of Blood was a decent band that came in the late 90's.

Judas Priest came out with Painkiller in 1990 (I believe)

Good stuff still came from the early 90's but it slowly went downhill.

That decade produced Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden and Beck.
Hum is one of my favorite bands.
Although I would still agree with your assessment.

Nope, this is the music forum not "METAL" forum.

Plus you seen some of the Whitesnake I listen to.

True.  Honestly, I used to hate Modest Mouse, and a buddy of mine made me listen to them, and I wound up really liking them.  Some of that shit is pretty hard to play on the guitar, too.

There was a lot of good music that came out of the 90's. As others have mentioned there was Alice In Chains who IMHO is the best band to come out of the 90s. There was Pantera, there was White Zombie, Clutch, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, The Hunger, Monster Magnet, Social Distortion and Down. You also had the Grunge supergroups like Mad Season (the best) and Temple of the Dog. Then you had the metal bands who reached their pinnacle in the 90s. Megadeth reached it's pinnacle in the 90s with Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction. Metallica peaked with the Black album and Load, Anthrax found it's voice and put out some great music,

It's just really unfortunate that bands like Greenday, Nirvana and Offspring became the influence for so many of the bands coming out now. Now we have boy bands who play instruments passing themselves off as rock.

Hopefully, one day in the future, there will be a revival of awesome metal. A metal renaissance if you will.

The way I see it, it's already happening. I don't know about where everybody else is at, but back home in Iowa & also in eastern Nebraska, there seems to be a pretty heathy metal scene. Probably a Side effect of Slipknot & Stone Sour, but that's alright.

But anyway, back to the subject. I listen to several genres, basically anything but crappy pop/pop influenced music. I like Rock, Metal, Country, Blues, Southern Rock, ect.... I still listen to some of what I liked in the '90s. I mainly listened to Metal, Grunge & some Rap back then. I still listen to Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera, Soundgarden, Tool, & Alice in Chains to name a few. I've even started to listen to stuff that was out back then that I used to hate. Pearl Jam though, I've gotta be in the right mood for, Eddie Vedder ran his mouth way too much for my tastes !

Oh hell yes!

I'm also a real big fan of the Screaming Trees/Queens Of The Stone Age scene. Nice touch of psychedelic rock added to what else was going on.

ETA: I think good music will come back again. The music industry will ruin itself hopefully and have to go back to the days of old. I honestly thought when mp3 were starting to get popular this was going to be the great regulator. But i was sadly mistaken.
