Here's my story:
Last night It was hot upstairs so I cranked down the AC, not uncommon as it was like 107 yesterday. Started cooling down, but then woke up at midnight to 92 degrees. I figured it was the fan on the outside unit, as I replaced the fan on the downstairs unit last year. Shut everything down and went to sleep downstairs. Fired it back up this morning, and it went right to work, so I thought I may have froze it up. Got home from work and again, not working and the fan on the AC unit not on, but the compressor seems to be making a lot of racket. Shut everything down, kill breaker and let sit a while. Fire it back up, and it runs fine for about 10 minutes, then same symptom. I tested the 6 pole connector where the fan leads come from with my wiggy, and have 110v on all. Also 110v on all posts of (capacitor?) It's dark again now, but if you need model, etc. I can get it. |

Okay, so you tested the leads going to the fan motor on the outside unit, got voltage, but the fan isn't spinning.
Likely diagnosis: your fan motor is shot. Don't run the compressor without cooling, or the head pressure will cause the compressor to fail. It's fairly simple to replace the fan motor, if that is the problem. If you replace it, replace the capacitor as well (should come with one). Ideally, you want the same motor (hp-wise), volts and amps. Check the plate. |

Thanks for the replies. After everything was shut off at the fuse panel, and let to cool down, I then restarted it.
Everything, including the fan, was working. Then I came out a short time later to find the fan not turning. I spun it when the power was off and it felt fine, but if I have power to it, and no workee, it's gotta be the fan, huh? |
