While I'm just in ROTC right now, I'll be commissioning this summer and was told to check AKO frequently. I had a problem logging in so I went through the steps to reset my password. I finally got it set, received the confirmation email, and proceeded to login. The new password wouldn't work. I'm guessing this isn't just an isolated incident, am I best off just calling the help desk?

Good luck...AKO is an f'ing disaster.

They are good about helping, but it's extremely sensitive to everything.

Example:  it strips out my e-tickets as dangerous attachments...even though they are sent from CAC .gov computers.

While in and of itself it is a security risk, you can sometimes forward your AKO to a "real" e-mail handler.

That sounds fantastic. I could tell they were going to be a PITA 3 years ago when I had to use a number and then a letter and then a number between 1 and 3 and then a symbol in order to have a proper password. But for now, is the help desk my only viable option?

You should probably call or e-mail the help desk.

For one, if you enter your password incorrectly, it just goes back to the login screen w/o any notification.

Are you using your CAC?  I think you have to use your CAC now to set up the account (register) initially.  And eventually you will have to use your CAC to reset your password...that can be another PITA...and don't forget the 15 (or whatever) security questions...you have to answer 3 every time you login w/o your CAC.

Honestly, probably the best thing you can do is to just buy a CAC reader and get it working on your computer.

It will save you a lot of hassle in dealing with AKO.

Unfortunately since I haven't commissioned yet and I'm not in the Guard I don't even have a CAC. I've got an old green ID. And come to think about it, when they initially opened up my account they as a freshman they had to have someone sponsor everyone in our class that wasn't in the guard. It was a 1LT, and I have no clue where she is now. So am I ultra fucked now?

This.

I can see their point, and it's no big deal to buy a $20 or $30 card reader to me, but when our junior soldiers get hit with buying something just so they can use the "mandatory" system.

Some units do issue them, tho.
