Are there any alternatives to this brand? My APC XS 1300 was 5 years old. Batteries went bad??? Replaced, now won't charge. Anyone else have this issue? Seems to be a few complaints on the internet.

Any tips or tricks?

The Batts will go bad in any brand UPS.  Five years was a good run BTW!

Also it's not hard to replace the Batts.

Edit: NM I didn't see the won't charge part.

APC is the industry standard in desktop and server UPS products. With millions of units in production, they are going to have a few that break.

5 years is a long time.

I use Tripplite in the office and in the field equipment.

If it doesn't charge see if there is a external/internal fuse.
I have had good luck replacing batteries on them.
I keep them plugged into a surge protector
Monster brand cause of the warrantee
surges kill the internal circuitry. Can you plug in to the serial port and use the software fora self check?
Maybe it's locked down cause of the old battery and needs to be reset.

Some have had good luck replacing the lost water in the batteries with distilled but it's not the easiest thing to do.

I lost 3 of them (APC) in less than a year. I switch to the CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD.

Has been on for over a year at this point without a peep.  Waiting to see how long it goes before it craps out.

I've had in my home and various employers a lot of APC equipment, and very few failures.  Shipped hundreds out for customer installs, and we just upgraded our datacenter UPS to a new APC solution.

That said, I've had a few APC, Liebert, and Tripplite go bad on me.  One Liebert just failed completely after a few years like what you're describing - and that was after replacing the battery a few years prior.  A set of APC units bit the dust after trucking for about 8 years when management refused to buy replacement batteries.  The small Triplite units we had under some desks failed after replacing the battery outright.

That said, I've had the fewest failures with APC in my experience.

APC has some of the most deplorable costumer service I have talked to.  They try to blame the costumer and are technically incompetent about there own products.

5 years is not that bad for batteries, are you sure you have them all hooked up right?

I would suggest Intellipower for a UPS.  They make good double conversion on line units so there are not power glitches when switching back and forth to the batteries.

I don't have the software. Maybe I should go out and buy another APC then.

We use APC units extensively.

We have very little problems with them, for the sheer number of units we have deployed.

We use APC at my hospital, and we pretty much have every single computer and switch on an APC of some type.

The electronics will occasionally die, but it's a rare failure.  Batteries last about 3 years or so.

I buy APC for my home electronics, too.

UPS batteries only last 3-5 years.  APC is the industry standard, but I've been happy with Cyberpower 1000 and 1500VA units as a lower cost alternative.

On these little UPSs, I usually shitcan them once the batteries go.   You can generally buy a new UPS for just a few bucks more, so why not?

Next time I will. Good insurance if the device itself is likely to wear out.

We use Liebert, and we've had one fail out of about a dozen or so.  Batteries last about 5 years on all of them.

I had quite a run of problems with APC a few years back.  Lots of problems with the lower end units just dying for no apparent reason.

Also had one of their big datacenter systems just crap out with no warning.

Mostly switched to using liebert and powerware after that, but I'm working on a DR site that I went with APC again.  Hoping for the best on that one.

I've heard (though never confirmed) that lower end APC units overcharged their batteries, reducing battery life to less than it should be.

I run golf cart batteries and a charge controller, my batteries lasted 7 years.

everyone of my APCs died after their batteries died and right after they went out of warranty

When they died, did you buy new ones, or bought another brand?

I had fifteen lower end units all SMT1500 / 1000's & ( one smt2200) equivalents with mgmt. cards spread across four buildings.  All lasted more than five years and some are on their second batteries.  Its was Con Ed power on a dead end street and large compressors & A/C units making it a hell hole for computer equipment.  Constantly switching to battery power or AGV mode during the daytime, with power going completely out sometimes, for minutes to hours.  Network shutdown software saved many a server and eliminated data loss & corruption.

Yep; a couple failed but only long after the warranty expired.
