I have tried to search various topics over the years and it always comes up with nothing. Is the search feature only for paying members or am I doing something wrong? I plan to get a membership very soon, but was curious if it should work for non paying members? When I read the description of the memberships it isn't clear to me if it will work better or "then" it will work.

A lot of people spend a lot of time here so buying memberships help staff run the site and it gives us non staff guys a way to help give back. The Team Forum is a nice perk, the search function and the avatar (and email and photo housing for Gold/Plat, etc)...they are all just perks. You don't have to pay...but it is nice to help support the site. |

Make sure you have spelled everything correctly, you are searching the correct forum, and that the date range is 3 months as this will give you the best chance. ETA: Doing exactly that in the AR15 forum, I came up with 4 threads whereas with a Team membership would yield 14 threads... |

Inside General, you need a Team membership. |

<–– see over there for how long i have been a member. somewhere around 99.99% of my posts are in technical forums, not in GD. i look stuff up using the search engine –– *a lot*.
that said, the functionality of the search engine here on ARFCOM is poor. besides the "hole in time" in between the current board and the archive server, there are a number of other deficiencies which make it less useful than it could be. moreover, a large part of the reason that the same topics come up so very often ("what are M4 feed ramps?") is that searching is so very cumbersome. using google to search ARFCOM (example shown above, using the "site:" meta-tag) often yields better, more relevant results. i will continue to re-up my membership, but it's not because of the incredible utility of the ARFCOM search engine. ar-jedi |
