How contagious is this?  My boss was in contact with someone who went to the hospital with this over the weekend.  I was around my boss all day Tuesday.  Today I feel like someone needs to dib on my guns and ammo.

How long do I have?

Oh and wife unit gets all the guns and ammo and none of you bastards get her.  Just saying.

Depends on the type of meningitis
All meningitis is becoming a rare occurence thanks to the evil vaccines we use
Most common now is viral, which tends to be mild and self-limiting.  There are exceptions, of course.

We actually have two cases in house now. Hadn't seen any in a while and two unrelated at the same time is noteable.

Most likely viral, more like a cold or a mild flu.
Bacterial meningitis is bad news and more than likely the said person would be extremely ill. From what you said I would guess this person had viral etiology.

if you are being serious, yes, if you have a headache and barfed you should fo to the doc.

i had a mild viral form a few years ago, they will TAP your ass (and I don't mean Hornady) and stick an IV in you and give you painkillers until you get better.

if it's bacterial, you should have been at the doc yesterday.

p.s I AM NOT A DOC.

Common up here in Rural Alaska.
People especially kids die every year from it.

My buddy had it about 10 years ago. Flu like syptoms. Lost vison on his right side. Right arm and leg were paralyzed by the time he got to the hospital.

Initial diagnoses was a brain tumor, the second opinion was very late stage meningitis. They're not sure how he survived.

It took a couple years for him to regain full use of his right arm and leg.

Go to a doctor.

I had a few exposures on the ambulance over the years. As a precaution they put you on a med (the name escapes me) that makes your piss orange. Not tinted, not kind of orange.......it's straight orange. Will freak you out when you take a leak.

And that's for viral obviously.

Nope.

The drug is rifampin, which is bactericidal.

No dibs for you!

Ok, ended up going to the doctor who ruled out flu and send me to the ER to rule out Meningitis.  About 9 last night menigitis was ruled out and I was allowed to come home.  More fun then I can say.

Bacterial meningitis can be contagious and it is the most difficult to treat.  It is spread through saliva and mucus much like a cold or flu.  Viral meningitis is not so contagious and is rarely fatal in healthy adults.  Other forms of meningitis are caused by parasites and fungus but are extremely rare in the US.
Meningitis increases pressure in the cranium and down the spinal column because the protective membranes around the brain and spine swell.  If you have a headache but without a stiff, sore neck, you likely do not have meningitis.  But go to a doctor anyway.  If they determine you likely have meningitis they'll have to do a spinal tap to determine what antibodies are present as well as determine the kind of pressures that are being exerted down the spine.

ETA: Good to hear you don't have meningitis.  It would be the shittiest week of your life.

Just the testing was pretty shitty!  Though I did get some good drugs.
