Which is best .308?  I'm going to buy one soon.  I partial to the AR-10 with 18" stainless barrel.  Easy to add a scope to it.

Gotta go with the FN.

That being said I do want a older M1A but honestly the FN just feels more comfortable to shoot.

For what purpose?

AR10 is most accurate. FAL you can fondle and pretend to be a Sealous Scout. M1A you can shoot Highpower competition with and handicap yourself against the ARs.

Since the answer is usually "get both", I'd say get a Rhodie FAL to fap to, and an AR10 to blast with.

IF I can find my brass it reloads fine for me, the fluting even irons out through the sizing die.

M1A is service rifle legal in NRA Highpower, but tends to do poorly vs AR15s. Basically it is a handicap.

If you're wanting optics, save yourself the headache, and get the AR-10.  My favorite gun is my M1A, and yes, I have an optic on it.  That being said, if I know what I know now, I'm not sure I would gone that route.

AR-10.  Easier to maintain than a M-1 Garand or M-14.  Fewer moving parts than the FN-FAL.  Not as ammo sensitive as the HK-91.

I've never had an M1A, but I've owned a HK-91, a FAL, a Saiga-308, and a .308 AR.

By far, the .308 AR is the most accurate, and most favorable to optics and accessories. I've never had any reliability issues, either.

As a matter of disclosure, my FAL was a Century import with "Unibrow" feed ramps.  Because of this, its reliability was dismal.  However, when it did feed it was nowhere as accurate as the .308 AR.

Funny. I put an ACOG on my M1A. It took a lot of time and money into getting a setup where I could use that optic without craning my neck and getting stove pipes. If you've got the cash, pick up a Sig 716. I'm pretty happy with mine.

it is mostly, though it does work harden the brass quite a bit and that cuts down on brass life if you don't anneal, I don't. It is not worth my time.

I am a FAL fan, and freely admit that the AR10 is superior, and the SCAR17s even better.  I will likely buy my own SCAR as a Christmas gift to myself.

I have ditched the HK system (except for my MARS CETME, just too collectible) as well as the M1A.

No brainer then, you're not adding optics easily to your other choices.. I would go with a DPMS type receiver though instead of the AR-10 so that you can use Pmags.  Better yet, just get the parts together and assemble your own.

Ar10 for precision, FAL for fun, M1A for nostalgia.

Granted, most examples will outshoot the shooter regardless.

Maybe... but .308 has proven its effectiveness.  And as long as it is a current-use military caliber, I'll have mine it that caliber.  However, I value pragmatism over perfection.

I was thinking of the PSA route and building it, but I have my own FFL, so I can order what I want at cost.  I was thinking Armalite, but Sig looks good, too.  I could source all of the parts and assemble, if necessary.  I will likely go with ar platform, I just need to figure out if I want to build it or just order something already put together.

More so on the .mil full-auto variants.  It's a rare occurrence with the semi-auto 17's

Have or had all three mentioned plus a HK91 and SCAR 17

Sold the FAL, it was a POS but I think that was mostly due to it being a Century build. Will get a nice DSA someday though.

Love the M1A but scoping it sucks. Sure I could get a different stock setup but that defeats one of the best features, the walnut.

Love everything about my LMT MWS  but it is a beast and I'd hate to have to carry it for long periods.

The HK91 is a great gun but compared to more modern firearms the egos suck. It mostly just takes up safe space now.

If I had to grab one .308 gun out the door and never come back I'd take the SCAR 17s.

This is jmho, ymmv.

Why do people still say that? The inherent inaccuracy of the rifle is added on to the shooter's error; it's not one or the other. So everyone will shoot better with a more accurate rifle, regardless of skill level.

Looking good is the only thing that an M1A does better than a good .308 AR. For a rifle that will be used, the AR does everything better. More accurate, just as reliable, easier to scope, better ergos.
