[ARCHIVED THREAD] - AR 15 Alternative (Page 1 of 5)
Posted: 3/9/2015 1:34:57 AM EDT
| So my parents have forbidden me from getting an AR, long story short they pay for college and I don't want to loose that benefit. However, their fear of the AR is mostly based in media news coverage. Since I'm looking for a SHTF gun, as well as just a general fun, semi, plinking gun that is decently affordable to shoot, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for alternative guns? As of now I have a shotgun and bolt action rifle. Benelli Montefeltro 20g and Ruger American 7mm-08. I was looking into a Kel-tec sub 2000, but the gen 2 model that is coming out sometime over the summer. If anyone has any suggestions for alternatives that would be awesome! Just mainly trying to stay away from the AR platform due to my constraints. |

Why don't you engage them with a rational cogent argument that clearly explains the fallacy in their views? I'm sure that if you simply explain and prove to them that they are engaging in argumentum ad passiones, they'll be quick to recant their irrational ideas and turn to the side of reason.

Ruger Mini 14? It doesn't look "as evil" to non gun people (a Ranch Rifle for even more less evil points just from the name), it will fire just as fast and as many rounds as an AR15 and you can turn around and sell it when you can get something else.
I wouldn't turn down a free education either. |

I'm not naive enough to turn down a free education. It's not like I demanded them to pay for it. Quoted:

Stop relying on your parents Work and go to school and live your own life I'm not naive enough to turn down a free education. It's not like I demanded them to pay for it. What he is getting at is that you're still under their thumb, like it or not, because they're paying for your school. They make the rules. Go find a good AK if they'll allow it. ETA: my parents paid for my college degree too. No motorcycles or tattoos. They are gun people though. I waited until I was out on my own to get a tattoo and bike. |

I understand that, I'm not complaining, I'm complying with their rules, they specifically stated I cannot get an AR. Therefore, I'm seeking alternatives. |

Do you live at home? I'm guessing he attends Duke University, and goes home to mom and dad in Suffolk, VA during the summers and weekends. I live in a dorm, and next year I will be an RA so private housing is not possible. So still my parents house is wear my toys stay
I do not go to Duke haha and I am not from VA, |

You need a handgun more. But, an alternative would be bullpup, maybe an AUG. Not 21, but i do have a buddy that has his CHL and has offered to buy me a handgun with the condition he keeps it at his house, but i could go get it whenever I wanted. Also, could he not gift it to me as well? can't you be gifted a handgun at 18? clearly that would not be told to my parents, very anti handgun. Definition of Fudds, still love them though haha. |

So let me get this straight... Your parents won't let you get a AR but you can get any other gun? Well, they specifically dislike AR's, they didn't have a problem when I came home with my Ruger American. They're just scared of AR's cause of the media. Honestly they wouldn't even know how the gun functioned or what it was if it's not an AR. Back when I was getting my shotgun my dad tried to tell me that semi-automatics were impractical and too dangerous. Was insistent that I could only get a pump. Thankfully in the end he lost that fallacy of belief haha. |

How about an M-1 Garand from the CMP? AR-15s will more than likely be plentiful in a few years when you graduate from college, but the same may not be true for M-1's... I want one so bad, I'm not in anything through the CMP though. There's literally nothing around where I live. Also, i'd rather not have a shit one too, i'd want at least a nice grade one. |
