Different tube length, as well as different buffer and buffer spring length.

probably better off in the tech forms but the answer is no the buffer tubes are different, as are the spring and buffer... but if you want to switch it yourself the AR is easy to reconfigure, check the do it yourself forums

+1, i did it in theater with a standard screwdriver and a hammer and a $20 stock from CTD

definitely possible, but i would suggest using the proper stock wrench for installation/removal of the carbine buffer tube, if you needed to you could assemble an entire AR without specialty tools  but they make the job much easier and you get fewer gouges on your AR when you miss hammering the screw driver.  

the beauty of the AR platform is how easy it really is, if you actually give it a shot even the least mechanically inclined person can slap together a functional AR within a couple hours with a minimal amount of specialty tools from nothing but a box of parts
