Is all ATF alike or are they make-specific?  I have a 2008 Ram 1500 and just found a half-case of ATF I bought for my Ford Escape; can I use the ATF in the Ram? Thanks!

You have been told correctly. Since time immemorial Dodge and Ford have used different transmisssion fluids.

If you have a Dodge with Hydraulic power steering, you can use the MOPAR ATF in the pump though.

To bad you don't live near me. I have two bottles of Mopar ATF +4 I bought to do a PS pump change but then traded the vehicle.
Sitting on the shelf unused.

Modern Dodge transmissions require ATF+4. You can use any of the licensed ATF+4 brands on this list. Amazon sells some of them for less than what the parts stores charge if you buy by the case.

If it's Mercon V I think ford is the only one that uses it.  Wouldn't put it in the dodge.
