I was in my local Fun shop yesterday and the owner drops this one on me. "Just to let you know the ATF contacted me tracing a gun you bought in 2006 here". I purchased a stripped lower from him and built a nice varmint rifle out of it.  In 2007 I got into some financial difficulty's and was forced to sell it. I sold it on consignment at another local gun shop and have the receipt.  No government official has contacted me yet on the matter. Am I screwed? Is the ATF going to knock down my door in the middle of the night and shoot my dog?

The ATF does random checks occasionally.  It is possible that it ended up in the hands of a felon or turned up at a crime scene.
They will not be kicking in your door.

If they want to know more about it they will try to contact you.

They will only want to know to whom you sold it to. As stated above the gun could have been used in a crime and they are trying to determine how it got into that persons hands. You sold it legally don't sweat it, just tell them you sold it to that shop and they will call him to see who he sold it to.

The Government moves slowly. They will come.

With that info, your cool.
I would assume that the receipt has the serial number clearly written upon it as well as the date it left your ownership?...

At the worst, you'll get a minor visit... show em the receipt and offer a copy of it to the nice Feds and they'll be quickly out of your hair.
I had a similar experience with an Auto Ord .45 (I was young and didn't know any better! ) a few years back, it was reported stolen by the father of the guy I sold it to... the ATF was just following the trail from Manufacture to FFL to 1st owner... etc
