I thought it was a virus with a screen that just looked like AVG.

Yeah, somebody posted a similar thread just the other day.  Last night I uninstalled AVG from my wife's computer and installed Avast instead.

AGV  has been crap for some years now. Not the first time it killed system files.

It bricked my 64-Bit Vista machine on Wednesday.  Couldn't boot into Windows.  Had to boot into Linux from a dvd, rename the AVG folder.  After that the machine booted into Windows no problem, uninstalled AVG, went to MSE.

so that's what that was. two nights ago it updated and ran a full scan and kept prompting me to reboot. I kepy telling it to fuck off until I was done for the night.
Yesterday morning try to boot and it goes through several failed startup attempts. Finally said to hell with that and dug out my system recovery disk and was able to go back to a recent restore point and recovered my machine.  Seemed to work fine. But hey no interweb. Had other shit to do the rest of the day, last night still no internet, none from my other comps in the house, and my linksys wireless router won't connect either.
So after a bunch of troubleshooting and tearing down my setup and plugging my cablemodem in at thh source in the garage and directly to my laptop, hey, internet's just fine. work my way back up my configuration and 'internet doesn't work'.   Finally narrow it down to it being my provider locking out the MAC addy of the machine that crashed, the MAC cloned to the router. seems some aspect of the crash triggered some auto-lockout on the provider end.  So not only did AWG fuck my system but it ate my internet baby too.
(fix/workaround was just cloning my laptop MAC to the linksys router and resuming 'normal' operations all-round)

No problems here. Oh wait, I don't use anti virus software.

I used to use that on some systems. Half of them bloat the msiexec.exe to 100% cpu and slow the systems way the hell down. Also misses tons of stuff.

I've had similar issue as described earlier of the costant prompting for a reboot. But, I've ran AVG for most of the last decade...

Fuck yes.  THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED TO MINE ABOUT 5 DAYS AGO.

This little fucking box popped up and said "you must restart your computer for changes to take effect", so I did, and the bloody thing wouldn't start again.

IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ANY OF YOU, HOPEFULLY YOU ARE RUNNING WINDOWS 7.

The way I fixed it was to run a system restore from the options menu that I was able to find before the system boots up.

Looks like you got the no paragraphs virus with a bad-spelling Trojan.

I've now lost 3 computers. 2 at work, 1 at home. System starts up, runs for a few minutes then reboots. System message if you've changed hardware, software etc.

Tried system restore, shut off in the middle of that. System Repair, it's now asking for administrator password (win xp) but it never had one.

I had removed AVG 2 weeks ago and installed microsoft security essentials because the previous computers shit the bed running AVG.

Help!

I've always run Spyware Doctor w/ antivirus.  Never slowed down the system like Norton, McAfee or AVG.

I still have the old version of AVG on my machine so far so good. AVG should've expired on 12/16, but it is still functioning for the moment.

System restore worked for me, but I'm running Windows 7.

This computer apparently had a driver go beserk on the Intel Pro Wireless BG 200. Either had to turn off the wireless or ultimately upgrade to the 2009 driver to get it to quit.  Did have to reinstall windows in a new directory before I discovered that to be the issue. Fubar'd the original Windows beyond repair however.

See my thread in Urban Commandos...there was a windows patch that was killing computers with AVG on reboot.
