I am looking for a stompbox to produce some fuzz for guitar. What is a good one? I was looking at the Dunlp Fuzz Face and it's MSRP $200! I just want a simple one that works, are they cheaper than this or is that prettym uch the standard price?

I hear it's not too hard to build. Should I go that route?

The average street price for most of the fuzz boxes I've seen was like $150.  My local music store has/had Dunlop Hendrix model fuzz faces for like $140.  I've used a Boss FZ-1 before, it sounded alright and it's like $120.

I dunno about building one, I couldn't do that.  Type A personality and all, I wanna plug it in and go.

I'm gonna build one. I got plans and they are super simple to make.

I guess most resistors are silicone instead of germanium now-a-days because of germanium over-heating issues. But I'm gonna try to add a small fan to it to keep it cool. I hear germanium has a different sound, and if I'm building it, it might as well be different.

I saw plans and a kit somewhere to build your own Tube Screamer.  I'd like to give that a try someday.

1+ on Tube Screamers.

I have a Wylde Overdrive (basically a tweaked version of the Tube Screamer) & it's great if I want to push the front end of an amp.

Right now I'm using it on front of my JVM with the gain turned all the way down & the tone & volume knobs at about 1 o'clock. That setting only puts out minimal distortion, so it creates a more harmonic tone on the overdrive channels & makes a tinny sound on the clean channel similar to David Gilmour's tone on "I Wish You Were Here".

But as far as fuzz boxes go, I'm at a loss. I never was much of a fuzz guy.

MXR Blue Box is an awesome tone box. It blends a fuzz signal with a two octave down mix.

But it doesn't have as much use as a regular old fuzz box.

Keely makes one called a Fuzz Head. Its badd a$$ but kinda pricey. If you look on ebay you can find them for around 100 or so.

Germanium distorts in a more tube like (for a transistor) fashion.  Germanium transistors are a little more difficult to get these days but certianly not impossible.

Here a Fuzz Face Kit for $55.  If you have a teeny tiny amount of technical ability you can build your own.
