A scanner darkly

This looks like it may be pretty cool even considering the actors in it.

We saw it last night.  It's a bit slower moving, more Bladerunner than Total Recall, but I thought that for the most part, the movie stayed pretty faithful to the book.  I enjoyed it, anyway.

(And it has everyone's favorite moonbat, Alex Jones, with a cameo role, which got the Austin audience cackling.)

Never read the book. Is this kinda like Fear and loathing mixed with the Matrix or something completely different?

It's not nearly as whimsical as Fear and Loathing.  It's pretty dark and gritty and it doesn't have a feel-good ending.  It's less action, more character study than The Matrix.  I am having a hard time deciding what I can compare it to!

what was the title of the original book?

The book is also A Scanner Darkly.

I really want to see this one but none of the theatres in my area are showing it.

They made a book out of that?

Two words:

Bore Ing.

Man, it was something that just went on and on and on.  The only neat part was watching Alex Jones get cattle-prodded.  Even the animated tits were bad.

Interesting way to spend an evening, but I don't know that I'm glad I paid 17 bucks to see THAT movie.

I'm having that same problem. Looks real good to me. Although the director has done Waking Life and I had a lot of trouble getting through that, had to watch it for an assignment, so I'm not sure how this will be. The trailer looked awesome and I like Keanu for the most part. Wanted to see him in Thumbsucker and I think he's trying to go in another direction, not just doing stupid romantic flicks or random roles. Hoping it'll be good. Will probably have to catch it on dvd though.

oh man. I dont think I'm gonna press hard to go see it soon. I was thinking it might be boring because hey lets face it, it's not going to be completely different from his other stuff. oh man. The animation looked awesome but then again in Waking life the trailer contained the best animated parts and then a lot of it looked crappy or just weird. ::sigh:: I was hoping another director would take that sort of animation on.

Anyone know what that animation type is called? I don't even know what to call it. Or anyone on here know the process? I thought it was something where the actors are filmed and then computer animation goes over it but I'm not sure. Would like someone who knows to tell me please thankies

I saw it last night.  It was excruciating.   An hour fifteen of watching meth heads get stoned with very little interest.  Followed by 30 minutes of either foreseeable or indecipherable plot twists.

YMMV

It moves slow, it's about drugs, and it's depressing.

If you liked Requiem for a Dream, Rush, or Traffic, you might like it.

If you're looking for action/adventure, you're better off seeing something else.

I hate those stupid investment commercials that are done in the same animation style

I think all the principal actors have had some drug problems... probably why Linklater wanted them.

I will say that Robert Downey Jr. and Rory Cochrane's characters were (IMO) the best in the film.  Certified nutballs, and the actors fit them just perfect.

But no, not a huge stretch for Robert Downey Jr.

but I don't know that I'm glad I paid 17 bucks to see THAT movie.

I caught a before noon showing for $4.  It was worth $4.

I'm not into the drug movies like this.  i went for the 'animation' and that it was a P.K. Dick story.  I have to admit though, I really don't like the 'druggies are victims' tone of this movie, and alot of the drug culture movies, songs, and stories that came out of the '60's.  I did like Downey's character though, the over the top constant paranoia chatter was very arfcom like...

But, it was a decent flick.  I'd only hit the matines or catch it on a rental.  Wouldn't pay full price for it.
