Tomatoes with your breakfast.

I have a friend in Atlanta that will have sliced fresh tomatoes or stewed tomatoes with a little sugar sprinkled on top with his breakfast every morning.

He said it is a very common southern thing.

True?

Yep. I can't figure it out either.

I've seen sliced tomatoes served as part of breakfast in the South.  Never heard of sugar sprinkled over them though.  In the middle east, sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, cheese are part of breakfast.

Yes indeed.  Or sometimes served along side vegetables with supper, like with greens or beans and whatnot.

Gotta be fresh from the garden too when possible.

I slice up a tomato with Sunday breakfast from time to time. Salt and pepper only though.

I don't know about the south but a tomato sliced and topped with salt, pepper and chopped onions as part of breakfast is common in Poland and amongst Polish people. I love it.

He loves his grits also.

We had breakfast one morning when I was in town, a bagel and juice for me and eggs, bacon, grits, and hash browns for him.

While telling me that I did not know to eat, he salt and peppered everything on the plate, mashed it all with a fork scraped it into the bowl of grits and ate away.

We grow some amazing tomatoes around here. During the summer, I eat them every day. We have so many, if they don't get eaten or given away, they go bad.

I don't eat them for breakfast, but any other time.....A little S&P and you are good to go

I hate tomatoes, but my parents eat them every damn meal of the day.  They even have a few tomato plants in the back yard.  Walk into my parents kitchen and without fail there will be a sliced tomato on the counter.  My grandparents are the same way.

Funny you should mention this.  I'm cooking a pot of grits right now.   I've had tomatoes with breakfast, but never with sugar.  I've seen people put sugar on grapefruit, but never tomatoes.

Yea, never seen stewed tomatoes for breakfast either. When we would go visit our grandmothers, both of whom were as southern as hen shit,  there would be fresh sliced tomatoes and home made "cat head" biscuits at every meal and grits at almost every breakfast.
