according to an article I read, that only happens if it isn't made correctly.  Here is a link to the article that I read:

The best you can find today is in Japan, brewed by Suntori.
Avoid the bright green stuff that you find in Europe.
An outstanding Happy Hour beverage.

Active ingredient is wormwood -a neurotoxin.
If you drink it everyday, all day, it will cause damage to the brain.
But a glass now and then will do no harm.

ive read extensively online about the stuff.

from what i can tell from reading and drinking it once (king of spirits), it makes you very drunk very quickly. the alcohol content is some 70%. the secondary effect should barely be noticeable, but is kind of narcotic. for me it feels like i have taken a perscription opiate. this was the only time i have ever purposefully drank alcohol, and i kind of had to force it down because i dont like the taste of alcohol. but i wanted to try this just one time. i ended up drinking 2 small glasses.

ive read the stuff was banned because it was being made incorrectly by the early 1900s, and the counterfeit absinthe was highly toxic. you can order it from overseas for personal use, but it cant be sold in the US.

all things considered, its an interesting experience but i think it isnt worth the cost.

one thing to remmber is it becomes "drinkable" when mixed 5 to 1 with water and a teaspoon of suger added.  This knocks it from about 180 proof down to about 80 proof.  Drinking it straight is really an interesting expirence.  I drank 3 shots one right after another once, and needless to say I got fucked up but quick!

you can get Absentie here in the U.S. it is made from cotton wood instead of worm wood and has only half the "thunge"(spelling) count. thunge is what makes you get high in the drink. the American made stuff is also only 90proof so it hasa half the alcohol and half the thunge...so if you just drink it on a two for one basis there you go....

Wormwood and Thujone account for it's psychoactive properties. I've only had Hill's and the Suntori brand. Both were louched, and neither did what was expected. Tasty nonetheless.

Most of it available for sale online is trash with reduced woodworm content(per individual countries laws) if it has any woodworm in it at all.  That I know of, from my eurosavage friends, the real deal can still be obtained through czechoslovakia.

I read that the active ingredient in it is similar to THC in sctructure, and causes similar effects.

word on the street...

is that "hills" brand procured via czechoslovakia is not as bitter as rival euro brands...

[of course you have to do the whole sugar, fire & spoon dance]

-very- strong.

[think doing screaming nazi's all night [rumpleminze & jagar shots] while munching weak shrooms]

or so i've heard anyway...

[edited cuz i can't spell czechoslovakia *damns the rumpleminze*]

I found this one which appears to be much stronger than other brands:

Absinth King of Spirits GOLD

It also costs $180 for less than a litre, but it's supposed to blow away the other stuff available according to online reviews.

Hills was like mouthwash sampled it when I was in a bar. Sebor and La Fee is what I brought back from europe when I went  wanted to sample both styles french and Czech.
was a toss up between the two on strength.
Also speaking personaly it also seemed to be a lot of hype becouse we cant get it over here FDA banned Thunjune as a food aditive way back in the 20 or 30's cant remember when.  your not really drunk but your not really stoned is what it felt like to me more of a floaty semi lucidish drunk.  It was diffrent thats for sure I dont think it was worth the money I paid for the bottles thu thats for sure.
