Look for Saturday delivery to end by the end of the year.

I was talking to a friend of mine who happens to be a postmaster, he told me this and I replied that I wasn't surprised.

If you have a PO box you will still get mail on Saturday and the branches should be open as well.

Watch a private carrier specifically target that lack of service.

Will lose them money on package delivery.  That was about their only advantage over the parcel services.

If they want to make money they need a real package tracking and insurance.

It cost's more than $.44 to drive from my house to the next farm, but if I get a P.O. box, they charge me $15 a month.

I'd be good with one day a week delivery. I use private carriers for anything important.

I thought I read somewhere they were talking about cancelling Tuesday delivery.  A big part of that was the part in blue.

It was written that Tuesday was also their slowest day, but I could be wrong.

I could care less if postage quadurpled, and they only came 4 days a week...

Just STOP DISTRIBUTING UNSOLICITED COMMERCIAL MAIL!

I get more SPAM in my postal mail, than my e-mail!

That is probably their biggest money maker.

It appears we're losing our entire PO.

Personally I think mail delivery once a week would be sufficient, and possibly even prudent in the future, considering the electronic data age we're moving towards.

Well, they have to find some way to fund leaving the ER open on Saturday.

Fine by me, all I get is junk mail anyway.  I pay all my bills online and don't even get paper copies from most.

Amen!  I've got a tiny little box at my condo, and everyday it crammed full of shit-paper mail.

But, like the other guy said, that's probably how they make most of their money anymore.

cutting saturday and no delivery or box mail either, most offices will be closed and no mail delivery.

mother in law and wife both work at the p.o....

wife is a contract carrier they are also looking into consolidating rural p.o's.

they are also offering early retirement for  employees with enough time.

I would be okay with delivery 3 days a week.  What most overlook is there is the same volume of mail which means some of the routes will need to become shorter and thus not saving as much as you would think.

BTW: I don't work for the post office, nor do I know anyone who does.
9/6/2009 5:39:44 PM EDT

They should cut Tuesday and Thursday too, lower the stamp price, and actually make it into the black for a year.

9/6/2009 5:41:44 PM EDT

Might as well go to 3 days a week. Mail is an antiquated 19th century concept. There is almost nothing the post office does that cannot be accomplished faster and cheaper in other ways.

The post office cannot just stop 6 day delivery. It has to be approved by congress first.

Six day delivery is mandated by law. Any change has to go through Congress and would mean 30,000+carriers losing their job. Do you see a pro-union Democratic Congress and White House going for that during the worst recession in modern history? Your friend is drinking the Kool-Aid.

+1

Waiting till 8pm to check to see if there are any updates and usually there aren't, and really having no idea where your package is makes me inclined to use other carriers

Just a heads up. If they do this to you, you can fight it because once a delivery point is established it can't be change unless for your health reasons (ex/ you becoming handicapped) or for a safety reason (dangerous traffic, gangs, dogs). If you are told otherwise take it to your state or federal representative. Ending Sat. deliveries I embrace it, I've been working Saturdays for 24 years. But I'm not disgruntled .

With Saturday delivery, I can get 6 movies a week from Netflix at my current subscription level. Without Saturday delivery, I get half as many for the same money.

The mail center at the end of the street may be a good idea. At least in the semi civilized parts of town anyway.

They should deliver Monday, Wednesday, and Friday to residential... Businesses (corporations, utilities, etc) get it 5days a week.

I don't know what happened 6mo ago, but I get hardly any mail other than bills. My junk mail really dropped off, by a large amount.

Have a friend who is a mail carrier, junk mail is very important to the USPS and they take the delivery of it seriously.

Anyone else think USPS' insurance rates are high? I never compared, but UPS and FedEx seem lower.

I would find a multi-unit mail center totally unacceptable.

I recently bought a 42" TV and an HDMI cable to go with it.  The TV was shipped UPs and arrived in Dallas from Illinois in 3 days (including the weekend).  The HDMI cable was shipped from Kansas, right on the friggin border of Kansas and Oklahoma.  I google mapped it.  It took the USPS 6 days to deliver that damn cable which was shipped from a city 6 hours away from me.

No saturday delivery, hell one day a week wouldn't bother me at all.

Insurance?  WTF do I have to pay insurance for? We; the carrier service and I, entered a contract when I payed them the price that they demanded to DELIVER MY PACKAGE to the destination that I payed for.
