Just woke up choking on stomach acid. Not the first time but it's still scary as shit when it happens. Anyone else ever have it?

I guess having that turtle sundae right before bed was a bad idea

I had it for years, same problem as you. Waking up choking, stomach acid in your lungs, it's horrible. If it goes on for a while it can lead to Barretts esophagus, which can cause throat cancer, so it's no joke.

I found making a few changes in my diet cured it for good. It works, if you can commit.

The number one thing that helped was quitting chewing tobacco, if you don't smoke or chew, it's going to be easier.

Try avoiding eating anything about 3 hours before going to bed, if you do elevate yourself. Don't lie down flat.

Avoid anything spicy, tomato sauce or anything with high acidity..

The best cure is drinking Apple cider vinegar straight if you can manage it, just 2 cap fulls got rid of heartburn instantly and made reflux almost disappear. Take it before you go to bed.

The next best alternative is drinking lots of water, that helps even more with apple cider vinegar.

Try that, it cured me. I haven't had reflux in months..

Happens to me every once in a while.  It's not like taking a deep breath and not being able to breathe, I always feel like I've completely exhaled every time it happens.

Yes.  I had never had heartburn before in my life...then at 0200 in the morning about 8 years ago, I woke up with fire in my throat.  We had nothing in the house, as far as antacids go: It had never happened to us.  Not even milk.

Wife remembered about using a teaspoon of baking soda mixed with water, and it helped much...but once it starts and that first burn gets a bite, it takes forever to go away.

I've had attacks maybe twenty times since that first...the burning is so excruciating that it makes me gag, which makes me cough, which makes it worse...Oh, Lord...does it make it worse.  Three times I've coughed up blood when this happens.

Tried Prilosec...did the two-week regimen, and that kept me good for several months.  I recently switched to a...Zantac?...pill that you can take before bed if you think you're going to have an attack, and it's worked for me every time I've used it...but I haven't had an attack in over a year.

The pain was so bad during some of those attacks that even if I'm in a deep, deep sleep now, the slightest tingle of burning in my throat has me jerking awake and shooting out of bed.  Lying down seems to make it incredibly worse.

I get it every now and then depending on what I eat. I'm a night owl and often eat right before bed, but ever since I raised the head of the mattress a few degrees I've been fine.

I have GERD but not to the point that I wake up choking on acid. I will feel a sensation like something is coming back up and then get that sour taste for a second. Sometimes I feel a bit of mild pain right under my sternum. Other times I will hiccup, or burp, or feel like I can't breathe and cough. I used to wake up with a sore throat feeling.

Tried changing my diet, that didn't really help. Built a wedge to put under my mattress to make me lie at an incline, that didn't help much either. Been taking Prilosec OTC for months, and just recently stopped taking Zantac OTC at night as well. I usually pop a couple Tums a day also.

I don't smoke, rarely drink, don't eat crap (not much anyway), don't eat close to bed time, don't drink soda, and I'm not overweight (could stand to lose 10lbs of fat probably). Yeah, I probably have a hiatal hernia. I think in my case stress really aggravates the problem.

Sleep on your right side, and it decreases the frequency of this happening.

Go see your doctor. This can be serious.

I had terrible GERD. Had my gallbladder out (not a treatment, but it helped) and take omeprazole 40mg daily, no more GERD. My endoscopy was totally clean. If I miss the omeprazole for a day it comes back. Doc wants to wean me off it, but he's not in a rush.

Another vote for apple cider vinegar.  The problem is you don't have enough of the right kind of acid in your digestive system.  Coffee, alcohol and smoking are bad for the digestive system.

Also, don't eat right before bed, eat smaller amounts at more intervals, and take Prilosec.

Get it under control before it turns to Barrett's Esophagus.  Sleeping on your left side will help.  It may just be occasional, but it can be happening during the day and causing problems in your GI tract.  I had 2 ulcers and a couple others starting and also Barrett's.  I've been taking acid reducers for years, but found that the only one that works is Omeprazole capsules and Nexium.  Nexium is the 2nd generation of Omeprazole.  During my last scope, last month, the stomach issues were gone and he couldn't see the Barrett's.

Anybody that has suffered with AR and found a good treatment will understand this.  If you can feel the presence of your stomach, you have a problem.

I used to have this problem quite regularly. You're right, it is scary. Drinking alcohol, and eating too much at dinner was what caused it for me. Don't eat until you're stuffed and don't drink too much.

Also, taking Prilosec (Omeprazole)  completely eliminated the problem.

Don't eat anything for at least an hour before you go to bed at night.

I would try the simple stuff first before you start down the Omeprazole route.

I take pills for acid stomach, too. Have for years. It's for all day relief.

Waking up choking on stomach acid in the lungs comes from eating too much too close to bed time. Separate issue.

Don't eat or drink close to bed time...problem solved. On those nights when my stomach os still full at bed time, I'll sit more upright on some pillows to go to sleep. At some point the stomach will empty and I can lie more flat.

Hell yeah. That stuff is magic. I've used everything from eating Tums all the time or taking Zantac 150. None of that shit worked very long or all that well.

Got prescribed Omeprazole from the VA hospital and never have any stomach acid issues again.

Cutting wheat and sugar from my diet pretty much eliminated my acid reflux, assuming I take it easy on the beer (sugar).

Sugar feeds bad bacteria inside you, reducing your ability to digest food, so your stomach needs to use more acid to break down the food.  Or something like that. I'm not a doctor. But prevention seems a lot smarter than treatment, when possible.

ETA: Sorry about the giant font, not sure how I did that

I've dealt with it for a few years.  As others have said, it helps to avoid eating anything substantial for a few hours before laying down in bed.  As long as I finish eating dinner before 7:00 pm I'm usually fine.

Also, I occasionally take Omeprazole in the morning.

I used to have it frequently. Change in diet helped.

It's also one of the symptoms of sleep apnea, go look them up, see if you have any other symptoms.

Otherwise, try going gluten free, or eating so close to bedtime, etc. Lots of suggestions here already.

I think most people (not of course RA) are better off with an alkaline system

Acidosis and diabetes are commonly linked.

I changed my diet when I was experiencing Gerd or acid reflux.

Most people can do better drinking more water on a daily basis.

I watched my dad suffer for years and try to ease the symptoms by trying many things including drinking half and half. Tagamet helped him later in life and then Prilosec changed everything.

I've been taking it for close to 10 years now and it's definitely helped me.

Happened to me once, and it was not fun.  Scared the shit out of me, my wife, and my parents, whom we happened to be visiting.

I had just gotten over a stomach ache the day before from drinking bad milk, and that evening I had veal parmigiana with two beers, chased with chocolate cake and some ice cream.

So, it was the perfect storm of messed up stomach chemistry, tomato sauce, double dose of dairy, and chocolate.

I started getting reflux about 5-6 years ago. I initially tried Zantac and it worked for a few months; but eventually it lost it's effectiveness.

My doctor wanted to put me on a special diet that would eliminate a ton of foods I like such as hot sauce, onions/garlic, beer which wasn't an option.

I was advised by some medical pros to switch to Omeprazole which I did. For me it eliminates the reflux 99% of the time; unless I lie down after eating.

It comes back if I skip a few days; but I'm happy with things as they are now.

However; my doctor would like to get me to cut down on it at some point in the future; based on some research into hip/bone structure issues that might or might not happen when I'm old. He said the long term affects from using Omeprazole are still in their infancy though.

I'm more scared to get scoped at this point and find out I have something worse; though I plan on getting it done in the near future.
