Whatcha got? I was just thinking, to me it kinda seems that many of the big actors do play the same characters across different roles and movies. But I guess that's why they are 'big' - we eat it up. I mean, for instance I like watching Tommy Lee Jones and Denzel Washington act, but I swear they are the same character no matter what the role. In my mind, Samuel L. Jackson and Nicolas Cage are in there too - same character no matter what the role or movie.
Are there any actors or actresses that stand out as convincingly playing completely different characters in different roles? |

Kevin Costner plays Kevin Costner in every movie he ever did except Silverado
Mark Wahlberg has a lot of movies where he always plays Mark Wahlberg.

EVERY time we see a movie with Samuel L. Jackson in it, I say to my wife "Say what again mother fucker!".
I came to say Gary Oldman, but Daniel Day Lewis very much too.

How about Christian Bale - I've read he takes his acting very seriously and is devoted to its cause like no other - remember how he starved himself for that movie "The Machinist". But the more I think about it, I'm not sure if his emotional reactions or personal mannerisms differed tremendously between movies. Or maybe I'm wrong, or maybe in questioning this topic it's something that's against human nature - a continuity of base personalty?

Arnold Schwarzenegger won't be on this list. I'm not hating, but dude, that accent - how long you lived in America?

Christian Bale…Watch “The Machinist”…Then watch anything else he’s done…The guy gets into his roles.

John Wayne
ETA: to clarify, he has played a lot of roles, all remarkably similar to John Wayne. Including Ghengis Khan. |

Thought he did an excellent job. |

Here's one of my personal favorites, though most times you'll never know that it's him:
Attached File Attached File Doug Jones |
Jeffrey Combs
If you watch Trek he's a recurring actor in multiple series and you don't even see it. He's Gary Oldman-like in that he seems to disappear into characters. |
The cast of the talented Mr Ripley has a lot of talent. It's a good movie too.

Brad Pitt is actually rather versatile, when you look at movies like 12 Monkeys compared to Fury.
*Beat* |
Tom Hardy has done a good job with some pretty distinct roles.
*Beat again* |
FPNI, but I'll add Joaquin Pheonix and Sally Field ( I like her, I really really like her)

Sadly when they cast actors they pull from different movies and want them to play the same part as they did in the previous movie.
There is a scene in The Outsiders where Two-Bit runs and picks up a hat blowing in the wind that has the same silhouette as William Bonneys. I'm sure the casting director for young guns saw that and said "we'll have Estevez play Two Bit in a western". Then the actors get typecast. |
