I need to add some ram to my desktop. Win 8 is a hog and I keep getting low memory warning. Weird. I've already got one 8gb stick. If I want to add another stick, do I need to get the exact same one (brand, model, ect) or should I just buy 2 new matched sticks. On a computer years back, I added a stick from a different manufacturer and the computer didn't like that.

Matched is always best.  Ram is cheap these days, so get a matching pair.

If it's not a high-performance gaming system, just get the same brand and model as your existing stick.

If it is a high-performance gaming system, buy a new matched pair.

I've read that it's best to install matched sets.  But not required.

Before you purchase ram you need to verify what your system will support.  Crucial has a link that will tell you what you need. The system scanner and the memory adviser.

If you can get the same brand/model/speed/timings and all that then you shouldn't have any issues.

Be sure to put one in the dimm slot closest to the processor and the other in the third slot. (Skip a slot). Usually slots are color coded.

This will take advantage of DDR aka dual data rates.
