I need a quick lesson.  Shopping for a scope.

Looking for a scope in the approx. $100 range for general plinking and target shooting out to about 100 yards.  I think I want a 3-9X 40mm.

But it seems that most don't have an adjustable objective.  I thought that helps you clear the sight picture when zooming.  Is it not necessary?  I find it only on the really cheaper scopes.

Also how much eye relief do you need?  Is the larger the number, the larger you can be away from the scope and still see?  higher #'s better here?

you'll learn a quick lesson. i did

spend 100 dollars on a scope, you get a 100 dollar scope.

save a little longer, look in the 200-300 dollar range, there are some nice burris, nikons and others in that range

Vortex

i have one of vortex's upper end scopes. and it is a really nice scope.

and if you are only using it at 100 yards, you really don't need variable power, you could save some dough by purchasing a 10x power scope.
