Looking for small linux host to run a domain of mail accounts off of, one (1) static web page put up for flair, and a shell account with the usual *nix commands and tools.
This is for personal use, don't want to sink a ton it it, but thinking long term. I normally run them, but this one is too small to keep the one machine it was on alive. |

I've used these guys:
https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/services/pricing eta: I doubt you'll find anything cheaper. I use them to host a small php project with SSH access. eta2: here is what it cost me spent last year (I don't have email). I deposited $25 into my account which should last a while:

Raspberry pi and Dyn-DNS. I'm already paying for a few IP blocks w/DNS, this is the last one in a block I could knock off and save a bit. Power wise, though, the Raspberry Pi would do, and I'd still be able to run my own spamassassin and firewall configurations. The existing box is literally 17 years old, an old AMD K2 200Mhz with a hard drive that still works (that is the most amazing part, files from 1999 are on it!). The Number Nine Imagine 128 video card is what finally quit, shockingly. A raspberry pi would be a bit more than a "fresh" video card, but it would be faster and use less power. A Pi will be the fallback choice. Right now, capnrob97 is sending me a Parallella board, but that looks like to much fun to code on to be used as a static server, as it might make a wicked UAV or wheeled robot core... |

You should be able to do everything you want to do with Amazon AWS. It should also be free for the first year. So you'll be able to get up and running now, and still have a year to seek out a cheaper option before it costs you anything. I'd rather not go through a major targeted advertising company for it. I'd prefer the NSA to have to grab the email en route, rather than have copies forwarded to them. |
