First-thank you all for your service.
Can anyone here tell me about combat controllers? I have a boy that's going to be a senior in high school that was all set to go the Air Force ROTC route and try and be a pilot. He's always wanted to fly A10s. Then, he talked to an Air Force recruiter that has him all fired up about the combat controllers. I tried some research online (including a search here) but pretty much all I found was produced by the Air Force. They seem to be pretty bad assed but relatively unknown, at least relative to the other branch's special forces.. Thanks. |

Thanks. drop out rate is high. and as far as i know rotc isnt going to help you become a pilot in the air force... going to the air force academy and doing well will though. they get dropped into zones and clear an airfield or take over an airfield and are the first controllers on the ground to call in landings or troop drops. there up there but PJ's top the special ops in the air force. also TACP is another special forces option the majority of there time is spent with the army calling in air strikes. |

The Air Force is looking to train more UAV pilots than fight and bomber pilots combined from now on, so he may end up sitting in a box flying a Reaper from the ass end of Nevada.
I would still encourage him to go the ROTC path and try to be a AF spec ops officer. The AF has added officer equivalents to some of our enlisted SOF jobs, either way try to steer him to collage. After four years if he still has his heart set on combat control, go for it as an officer. Rob AF MSgt type |
