First of all as a newbie I want to say hello to everyone; I did a few searches for “Airsoft” but couldn’t find any information. I want to know what you guys know about “Airsoft” products that I am finding online that look just like the real thing. I ordered a fold down front sight just for comparison, and I’ll be darned, it looks and feels just like my more expensive “real” sight. As a matter of fact I can’t find any differences with my naked eye. Are the differences in material, machining or assembly of the whole part? I’ve been told these “Airsoft” parts are “Cheap” overseas copies and won’t stand up to abuse over time. But I like I said; without doing some type of metallurgical test, that I don’t have the equipment for, how do you tell the difference? The “Airsoft” part even has all the markings of the “retail” part I have.
I know from experience that “Cheap” overseas performance automotive parts have been around for a few years, and indeed these parts have proven that they are not as durable or reliable as say a billet rocker arm from a known manufacturer. Is it the same case for “Airsoft”? Pls excuse my naiveté about this subject. Thanks to all who reply. UGASeven... |

UGASeven... its likely lower grade aluminum, I'd say a lot of airsoft parts would work fine on a range toy. but on anything else why take a chance that your BUIS might break off if you were rough on the gun. |

Welcome to the forum! If you can't tell by now, airsoft is a touchy subject on here. The issue most people have is that cheap manufactures will violate international patent and trademark laws and sell parts as if they were real-steel versions. Consider the Magpul UBR as an example. Unlicensed Airsoft versions have found their way on the market. Patent issues aside, the quality is atrocious compared to the real thing. Now, will you trust your life to some potmetal copy of a part? You wouldn't go to war with a PVC copy of a Kevlar helmet, would you? Airsoft has its place, and the best things you can do is support quality manufactures, such as Magpul PTS, that deal with properly marked and licensed merchandise. Or, you can buy a good airsoft gun and use as many real-steel parts as possible on it. |

Airsoft stuff is cheaper because it's usually made out of sub-standard materials such as painted pot metal, not anodized aluminum.
In the case of Magpul's polymer sights, Magpul even offers an airsoft version, but they're a lower grade polymer and not as heat resistant. It really depends on the parts in question, as some MFRs (like UTG) will make parts from anodized aluminum... generally speaking though, you get what you pay for. Sights won't do you much good if they won't hold adjustments, same with cheap scopes. |

I’m just curious if the difference in strictly in the material; which is VERY IMPORTANT. I’m doing my first build from a DTI stripped lower I purchased locally, and a complete rifle kit from DTI, with some assorted Daniel Defense parts. There was a post here not to long ago about a guy that set up IDPA courses in his backyard, and ran them with a high quality airsoft gun. It looked really cool, and like really, REALLY good practice. Could do it without driving to the range, and the cost was probably 1/1000th that of doing it for real. ETA: The "airsofters" that most make fun of are the ones who think their frigging GI Joe, and have never touched a real gun, such as fat boy below, or the EPIC thread with the airsoft wiener that we turned into an action figure seen above. |

It is my general understanding that the parts manufactured for the "Airsoft audience" are typically made offshore while that not being particularly bad, it is of the dubious quality standards that many of these parts are made to, in reality they work fine for the most part on thier intended application (a replica gun shooting plastic bb's). Would I buy one knowingly? No. Could I be tricked into buying one? Possibly, some of them are pretty good looking knockoffs. The other thing to consider is fitment, there may be some fitting required when using thes Airsoft aftermarket accessories. Interesting side note, The GSG MP5 .22 cal knockoff type is made by a company that puts out allot of Airsoft type equipment. There is a forum here dedicated to it. Stick around there are allot of good people here. |

I'm not sure why everyone is busting the OPs balls. Its a legit question.
If you have a rifle that is nothing but a safe queen then there is nothing wrong with airsoft parts. Its an expensive and deadly toy. For a real fighting rifle do not skimp or cut corners. |

There was a post here not to long ago about a guy that set up IDPA courses in his backyard, and ran them with a high quality airsoft gun. It looked really cool, and like really, REALLY good practice. Could do it without driving to the range, and the cost was probably 1/1000th that of doing it for real. Airsoft for training when you don't have the money? Heh, a lot of that airsoft costs more than the real deal. As a training aid it's certainly valid... and useful... but there's also a lot to be said for very realistic firearms you can fire full auto in your bedroom. In many cases you can't even do that with .177 caliber airguns. That's the part where airsoft is just plain fun. Plus theres the fact that a bunch of people can get together in a field and shoot at each other relatively safely? More fun. I'm certainly not going to say there aren't a great many retards with airsoft, because there are. There are also a great many retards with real guns though, so what the hell is the difference really? Wieners are wieners. As for Sgt. Sugarcookie, I'm just glad he's not running around with a pink plastic space blaster from K-mart. Now that would be gay.
