One step above Africans-wearing-lifejackets. I particularly love the guy yelling at his buddy for firing AK bursts next to his ear. Is this really the level of ability displayed by combatants in that region? |

The idiot in the funny hat firing next to the other dudes ear seemed like the only real dumbass in the bunch. For the most part it just looked like regular civilians who dropped what they were doing and grabbed rifles to try to hold off an attack. I really don't see the comparison with the Liberians et al. Lots of firing blind from behind cover but it looks liked it kept their attackers from advancing long enough for the regular troops to get there. |

No, it looks like they drew fire long enough for the opposing army to bring in arty strikes and move up some armor. Blindly firing an RPD over a hill towards an armored column is about on the same level of stupidity in my book as wearing a "Level IV PFD". |

They hold their own until the Albanian Army arrives and starts shelling the Yugoslav positions with tanks and artillery." |

Well, their tactics certainly suck, but they don't seem to display anywhere near the level of stupidity I've seen employed by jihadis (a great many of whom AREN'T idiots when it comes to fighting), much less Africans.
They just seem like normal civilians who suddenly got into "oh shit" mode and started fighting back, despite not having much of a clue what they were doing. They certainly were better armed than the majority of their American equivelents, that's for sure. Most of the men had AKM's, there were a number of RPD's, I saw a DP-28 (interesting that it would still be in use, but you take what you can get), and one holstered pistol I wasn't able to identify. Interesting that several of them had military-style jackets in O.D. green, one had what looked like an actual camo uniform, a couple had tactical vests, and one even seemed to have body armor. I wouldn't think civilians in that part of the world would be that well equipped. I wonder if they had any grenades. Say what you want about their fighting skills, they held the enemy off long enough for the cavalry to arrive at the last minute and blow them the fuck away. Far preferable fate to Srebenika. |

Thanks, haven't seen that before. Those guys probably belonged to the terrorist group "UCK". They almost never wore uniforms when they were fighting. I don't think the Yugoslav army entered Albanian territory for no reason, (could have been SF recon though), unless being fired at first and then chasing the terrorists over the border. The Yugoslav's didn't really have permission to go there, because the Yugo leaders didn't want Albania to join the game, they only wanted to fight the separatists.
The UCK terrorists had training camps inside Albania, and they got most of their weapons from Albania, but the real Albanian military was only involved once, iirc, and that was when they shelled a Serbian position in order to help the UCK (and probably some NATO SF that were with them, Albania didn't really want to get involved in a war since they had just had a civil war two years prior to the Kosovo war(and poor economy etc), so the only reason Albania would shell Serbia was if they were told to do so by NATO). This could have been towards the end of the war though, because the Serbian police(who were actually involved in most of the fighting, because this was really an insurgency, so the Ministry of Interior was used in the beginning, the army entered the conflict later) and Yugoslav army had driven the insurgents/terrorists/whatever to the border, so this could very well have been taken place at the border. That's when NATO decided to help the almost wiped out UCK, and well, the rest is history. The conflict actually started with the terrorists attacking police stations and Serbian restaurants and such, that's why they were considered criminals. They were not a foreign Army, but locals who had immigrated from Albania who decided that Kosovo was gonna become Albanian just because many of them lived there. Also, to the Jewish(sorry, I don't remember your user name, just your avatar) fella that posted above me: You're probably talking about Srebrenica, and it was not the Yugoslav/Serbian army that was involved in that, it was the Bosnian-Serb fighters (Most of them were from a paramilitary group made up of volunteers, many had been in prisons etc, just a bunch of bad people. I think they were called "The Scorpions", I have one of their shoulder patches in my collection). FYI, the Yugoslav/Serbian army had already pulled out of Bosnia in 1993 iirc, the VRS (Bosnian Serb army)+ the Bosnian muslims + the Croatians were the only ones involved at the time of Srebrenica (1995). btw, here is something interesting: Most of the people killed in Srebrenica were military aged men, and the rumor is that they may have been killed so that the Bosnian muslims wouldn't get a stronger army, see, the VRS were weak by that time(and the Yugoslav army didn't want to step in and help), so it's possible that it happened in order to stop the muslim army from growing and becoming stronger in that area.It didn't have very much to do with hatred. No excuses or anything, just trying to shed some light on this. Most people only know what they hear on TV. |
