It creates incredibly undue stress for the dog, and automatically puts them in a fight mode, where the handler is likely to be attacked. Why do people still believe this is a good idea?

Because the internet says so?

because bad owners take the word "alpha" too far and abuse what it should mean between dog and owner.

As with most things you have to take into account the totality of the situation.

99% of the time it is a BAD decision.

Important considerations for when it MAY be a good decision.

-Dog is a puppy.  Pups are predispositioned to both challenge the pack status and quickly show that they are subservient.  Alpha-rolling a 2month old pup is entirely different than doing it with a 6 year old adult.  Of course the activity that is causing the intervention must be considered as well.  Pup pooping on the carpet, not coming when called, or jumping on people should all be addressed in other ways.

-Dog has just done something extreme...like bit a child.

I use it on very rare occasions and it is always done with calm energy.  I'm firm, but not angry.  It's a tool in the tool box.
