Is there a way to find the words I have taught Swype?

Open new message to activate keyboard, press and hold the "Swype Key"(orange S with hand) - This opens the Swype settings menu.
Personal Dictionary is the option you are looking for.

If you want to clear the whole dictionary, that is in the same menu, under Preferences.

Strange.

The phone recognizes words I have input yet the User Dictionary is empty.

Might they be elsewhere?
Phone is a Samsung Galaxy Precedent.

Quoted:
Settings > Language and Keyboard > User dictionary

This way will let you see all the words that you have input into the Android system, but wont have any of the Swype dictionary.

I am on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus and I can go to Settings->Language & Input->Swype Settings->Personal Dictionary. This gives me everything that i have loaded into the Swype dictionary which is more inclusive than the Android system dictionary.

What Android OS are you running?
