How do you rate yourself with your knowledge about such? I wasn't a dog handler, but as a provost marshal, I got to learn a lot of them and their procedures.
Or I don't believe that I've ever been professionally associated with mounted troops, but as an Army brat, being here in Texas, I pride myself in knowing how to ride, my way around horses and tack. While there is significant cost associated with such units (conversations with San Antonio police), there is a lot to be said for height of eye. Or for that matter, even dolphins and seals. In the 60's, I was at a briefing that showed how a seal could be a communication device, a tool deliverer between the mother ship and the diver. If you aren't personally involved with them, how do you see yourself associated with them? ___________________________________________ ("That's a fine animal,"––stuffed shirt about the police horse in the elevator, (w,stte), "True Lies") |

Not a handler, mainly because my current Alpha hound wouldn't give ground to a k9 and I know a k9 would give up either...., but it is certainly interesting to see the difference between "animal people" and non-"animal people" on the beat..
My current main backup, (adjacent beats..., primary cover to each other) hates dogs, you can see the fear/hate in his eyes when we go t a house and find a dog.... Friendy or not. I've had to calm my partner down more than once when he's been over whelmed by the animals we encounter, I think it's like society as a whole,,, some folks like animals, others don't... We need a balance. I like to think of myself as the "dog whisperer" to my partners "I'll just wait in the car until that nasty shar-pei is locked up" type. I know he'll follow my lead with animals... If I hesitate, he will too. If I walk right in and scratch the dogs head, he will too. He does the same thing for me in dealing with people... He's good at talking with idiots... I'm not. I just follow his lead, He follows me with stupid animals, I follow him with stupid animals.... Hopefully this made some sort of sense... Off duty tonight... Rye and Limoncelllo go very good together. |
