What are these people accomplishing?  Are they just shutting down websites and what real effect does that have?  What good does it do to shut down the FBI's website?

Got your attention didn't it?

They view it as a form of protesting.

I don't know what they're protesting other than everything.  I don't see the point.

If they crashed Apple, Amazon, or Ebay they could cost people millions in lost sales. They have the potential for serious commercial disruption, like the did when they brought down a gaming site a while back.

If you don't know about SOPA or the FBI shutting down Megaupload and busting it's owner then I guess you just don't follow the news.

They may or may not be accomplishing anything is the long term. but they have shown time and time again that you don't really want them on your bad side. The FBI is probably one of the most powerful/well funded originations on the planet and shutting down the website might not seem like much but it kinda is.

I've heard them comment on these things, my question is why shut down the FBI's website?  Does it do anything?  It's not like shutting down Amazon or Ebay.

My guess is that they are retarded anarchists that want everything for free and feel entitled.

Not really.  I'm loath to post XKCD, but this is pretty much perfect for you post.  Just replace CIA with FBI.

Their website is a PR tool.   Until it gets to the point where their agents need to access the website to do perform their jobs, the FBI is not impacted.

I'm not defending them here, guy. I've merely explained how they see it. Does holding signs in front of any building actually do anything? No, of course not, neither does using DOS attacks on these websites to cause temporary outages.

I like to think of it as the real world equivalent of spray painting a cop car. No one really gets hurt but shows you might have a problem.

They think they're changing the world.  A mix of young idealism with "I'm part of a group that's doing stuff!".

My guess is you're the kind of guy who thinks that companies should buy tenfold more server space and store hundreds of copies of the same file in order to comply with DMCA safe harbor provisions because "IP is real," instead of eliminating data redundancy.

Shhh....somewhere a SAN salesman is crying over this knowledge you are imparting. Can't you just think of the SAN salesmen?

Anonymous is a .gov operation to get restrictions on the internet or maybe it's not. But whatever it is we're being watched anyway.
