My work is killing me they just added sports/firearm related sites to there restricted list.  My question is, is there a anonymous proxy server I can download on to my personal laptop for web surfing.  Thanks.  Joe

There are web based proxy servers.

Be careful....dont just google any proxy....you are gonna want ones that have been examined by the open source community.  Here are some:

Easiest way I've found is to download OperaTor, it is a self contained Opera browser with TOR and Privoxy included.

Basically download to your desktop and run from the executable (setup so that it doesn't store your browsing history) or you can dl to a USB drive and use it anywhere, anytime.

The site I orginally downloaded it from is now completely in Polish but you can probably find the link by clicking around. If not, PM me and I'll send you a zip file of my version.

I used a extension for FireFox called "SwitchProxy", which allowed you to specify a list of proxies and it would rotate through them at specific intervals to view websites. Good program.

I've had a few people request the link to OperaTOR so I uploaded it to these file hosting sites.
The sites are a little clunky (click the link, then find the 'download' button, then enter a 'code') so if you know of someplace that is 'one click' downloading that would be good.

Dowwnloaded OperaTor to my thumb drive and tried it at home and it worked fine, Took it to work-no go. I'm not sure what kind of internet filter they use, but I believe it is called Super Scout. Have been able to access AR15.com via the arfcom.com link, but recently it is coming up access denied. Does anyone know of any other workarounds?

This might sound a bit old fashion.. but.. before I retired in 2004 I got around our company's firewall by using the AOL dial-up account that us employees got as a company perk for $3 a month.

All I needed was a land line..

It was crude.. and slow.. but I could do arfcom, GT and all the rest at work..

Do you have a home pc that can be accessed from the net?

I used both linux  (VNC) and win2003 (remote desktop) on a older pc as a server at home to bypass the webfilter. Kinda slow but faster than dialup.

Google "Virtual Private Network" to understand whats going on if you are not sure what its about.

The webfilter at the job only blocked one port , port 80 , so I just used a random high port number.

EDIT: The best thing about that is ALL the web "traces" history, cache ect are on the remote pc not ANY pc at work!! So you can even surf porn and not get caught unless somebody is looking over your shoulder.

My company uses Surf Control. I can go to their website and test any website to see if it is blocked. They have recently added arfcom.com and jobrelatedstuff.com to their blocked sites.

The best way to go about this is to go to Google and search for the following string (without quotes):

"+nph-proxy"

You will get more results then you can imagine. Plus this way if they start blocking the normal proxy sites (like a smart administrator would do), you can always jump to the next one.

Or you could be a cool network administrator like me, and don't block a single site :)
